Lawrence University - Seeking tips for campus visit/interview

My wife and I are taking our son to visit Lawrence University next week. He graduates next year, and would potentially enter in the fall of 2011.

We will be doing the usual visit stuff (taking the tour, my son will sit in on a class, we will meet with the admissions staff). In addition, my son will be interviewing.

Is there anything unique to Lawrence that we should make sure to see, ask about, etc?

My son has read up on all of the standard interview questions for college interviews. Can anyone give us an idea of what they will ask in the Lawrence interview?

Thanks!

Tutorials and independent study really set Lawrence apart. I would try to ask questions about that of students, profs, adm coun. I think my son and I did not find out enough about those things, I wish we had learned more.

My son found the interview to be very comfortable, he actually enjoyed it. I do think it is important to be ready for open ended questions such as “tell me about yourself,” “why Lawrence,” etc., particularly at a school like Lawrence where I think they really do look at the individual, as opposed to just the numbers. They want kids that will be a good fit, really want to be there, and will be active in the Lawrence community. The first time my son was asked those types of questions it threw him for a bit of a loop, but he got pretty good at them.

The interview is really laid back. The intention (and they mention this at the beginning) is not to trick you, or trip you up with difficult questions. It’s their opportunity to really get to know your son, and your son’s opportunity to let them know the kind of student they would be adding to their community. As someone who just interviewed a less than two months ago, I can vouch for what nepop said, your son should be ready to answer the open ended questions like “tell me about yourself” and “why Lawrence” because they WILL ask him that. And your son should really know the answers to those questions because they will probably completely make or possibly break the admissions process. They love to see personality, so don’t let nerves get the best of him. I had THE best time with my interviewer…it was a lot of fun. But I had to break out of my shell to do that, and I’m now proud to say that I will be a Lawrence Student next year.

nepop and bizzie - thanks!!

bizzie - congrats on being accepted!

We are also going to visit Beloit, Earlham and College of Wooster. I think I will post something for those schools as well, to try and pick up some advice.

Thanks again!

FYI, we had a great visit last week and my S thinks the interview went well. Thanks for your help. He really liked Lawrence and has a lot to think about
