Anything at all about Lawrence University would be helpful. I am starting my college search, and it looks worth looking into.

Plan a visit if it all possible. That is what cinched the deal for my son 5 years ago. His best friend from High School was at his graduation in June and said he was sorry that he had chosen another school to attend and not LU. There are many outstanding colleges in the U.S. and this is one of them.

Our family would also appreciate any information on Lawrence - not sure if we will be able to visit before applying. Specific questions: Is there a culture split between conservatory and non-conservatory students (our daughter would not be conservatory)? Any professors, majors, programs you would highly recommend or that are especially strong? Can you describe the “campus culture” a little? Is it difficult to get to campus for an out-of-state student? Does the school seem to be run well? Anything else that current students/parents can share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I would search the older Lawrence threads - lots about the campus culture and the con vs noncon in here somewhere. Mostly very positive that I recall.

I’d also recommend reading the “Colleges That Change Lives” book listing for Lawrence - You need the book itself, the online summary is not as helpful IMHO. Also, if you are looking at Lawrence but not for music (both seem excellent), I’d suggest a look at Knox too.

School very well run! It is easy to get to LU because of the airport down College Avenue. Kids look at themselves as “nerds.” Great acceptances to graduate school. Look at the older threads as suggested.

Thank you for the responses! We have already tapped into “Colleges That Change Lives” - one of the reasons daughter is interested. We’ll read through the older threads - thanks!

Son and I visited this past Spring. Campus beautiful. New student center nearing completion, several new buildings, older buildings well maintained. Very friendly people, both the staff and the students. Students son met seemed very engaged. Class son sat in on was terrific–small, discussion oriented. One of son’s top choices.

I visited Lawrence in June. I am interested in the Conservatory. It does seem to be a big music school, considering that 1/4 of students are music majors. I think it’s still good for non-Conservatory students. The tour guides I had were non-Conservatory students, and they liked it really well. It was nice that non-Conservatory students think of the music Conservatory as a good thing, since at some colleges music is considered to be a “nothing.” It is an undergraduate-only college, so that is something to remember about it because of the opportunities that undergraduates can have when there isn’t graduate students to take everything. It’s very small- 1400 students. They’re building a new student center, which is supposed to have a movie theater, according to the tour guide.
