Hi, I was admitted through Early Action to UM LSA. A couple days ago I received an e-mail urging me to apply for the UM Alumni LEAD scholarship by January 30. I'm definitely going to apply, but I have a few questions.
Has anyone else gotten this email?
The email says the scholarship is very competitive. How many people apply and how many students are awarded a scholarship?
The email also says the scholarship is rewarded to students at UM-Ann Arbor, UM-Flint, and UM-Dearborn. Is the main criteria for the scholarship academics (I don't mean to be arrogant or snobbish, but the average AA admit is more academically accomplished than the average F or D admit)? It also talks a lot about ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and the D in LEAD stands for diversity. I'm a low income Hispanic student. Is this also a big factor?
Thanks!

I found everything but the number of applicants here http://alumni.umich.edu/get-active/giving-to-alumni-association/diversity-scholarship/scholarship-winners

Does anyone have any insight as to how many are invited and how many apply? It seems that about 40 students are awarded the scholarship each year. Also, the average GPA and ACT score have dropped the last few years even though the overall class’s average stats rise. Does this mean grades & test scores’ importance has fallen (even if it is still very important) while other factors (diversity related/ tough family and economic circumstances) are given more weight?

My son was also invited to apply last week. He is Caucasian and not going into Nursing though, so from the website stats you sent - I’d say he’s probably not going to get it!

same with my son. I called and talked to the liason-my son was included because he chose not to “check the box” and the LEAD committee chose to be overinclusive rather than exclude anyone (they included everyone with no checked box). We are not bothering to apply, don’t want to waste our time or theirs.
