Passed on LEAD scholarship.. how competitive

So I received very little money from Michigan, and was thus unmotivated to apply for the LEAD scholarship since I thought it was a lost cause. How competitive is the LEAD scholarship? I got to Phillips Exeter Academy and have a 3.1 GPA and an 1850, and I'm a first generation latino with a single parent? My EC's and leadership positions are great but my academics weren't all that high? Was I a fool to pass on this scholarship, or am I not really missing out on anything?

bumppp… anyone??

The only way you’re guaranteed not to get it is if you don’t apply. The scholarship focuses heavily on trying to get more diversity at the school, specifically “The scholarship is aimed at increasing diversity at the University of Michigan – if you are an underrepresented minority student (i.e. black, Latino/Hispanic, or Native American) we highly encourage you to complete the application.”

Being that you are a first generation student, I imagine they would look at that in a different light too.
