Leaders Application?

Could anybody tell me more about this application? When is the deadline? Is it early action? I was considering Willamette already when I received an email telling me I could do this application without fees, so if I can, then I don't see the harm of applying if I don't have to pay to do so. But it would be nice if I knew more information about the application itself.

Well, follow the link, and you will see the application. It is pretty easy. It is non binding, and it is more like rolling admission than EA/ED. My daughter sent hers in last week - it only took about an hour.

You will be notified about three weeks after Willamette receives all the components: test scores, school report and letter of recommendation. My child was accepted before Christmas last year. If you are going to be offered merit aid, that comes with the letter of acceptance. If I remember correctly there is no deadline. Kids from our high school applied throughout the fall. In fact, during admissions events in the spring, the dean of admissions announced that they were still receiving and evaluating applications (this was in April). Willamette received over 8,000 applications for a class of 500.

No letter of recommendation is required. They also make it unclear whether test scores are required (but we sent them anyway). I believe they did give a deadline of 12/1. (also, last year, apparently they promised a 3 week reply, this year they are not saying - apparently, last year they got bogged down in apps at one point…)

You can’t access that application from the Willamette website; you have to be invited to apply. There isn’t really a December 1 deadline. My son applied with the leaders application a few days before Christmas. Willamette sent the invitation sometime around December 20th. I don’t remember whether he’d received that email earlier, but he paid attention the second time around, because he had just been rejected by Whitman, where he had applied ED.

I think it took about 5 minutes only to submit that application, and he did send all test scores. Apparently the next day Willamette emailed his school counselor and asked for the school report and counselor’s recommendation, which the school sent right away. He received an offer of admission within 3 weeks.

The original offer included some merit money, but after his mid-year school report came out, Willamette increased this offer (strong grades in all honors/AP courses).

It certainly doesn’t hurt to submit this free application, and you’ll know the result really quickly. Nothing to lose.

My son got one and submitted a week or so ago. I thought there was a November 30 deadline, but that could have been Withworth. There is not an LOR, but there is a school portion that asks how strongly they would recommend the student. I think they promised a 10 day or two week turn around after all info recieved, which I think included SAT’s as reported by your school, rather than collgegboard. Also of note is that the application asks if you have ever been suspended from any school. Unfortunately this applied to my son, although it was in 8th grade, and we were hoping it wouldn’t be relevant for collage apps.

BTW, he left out some info and they emailed right away to let him know, and then right away when he responded. That was nice!

Two week, Shrinkwrap? when did you hear that? I know my daughters transcript, etc, was received last Thursday, so maybe next week? It will be nice to have an acceptance so early in the process!

“Two week, Shrinkwrap? when did you hear that?”

My imagination maybe? Sure can’t find anything documenting that now. Sorry! I must have been confusing it with one of the others.

It seems that last year they were saying 3 weeks, and may have gotten bogged down at one point, so they are not saying anything. It seems the 3 weeks was from the time you sent in the application (assuming transcript came in a timely manner). So, that is what i am hoping for.

I maybe over thinking this ;-)

I think I remember your name from the last time I was hanging out on CC(when my son was applying - he graduated in 2008)

Could be! I have a D that graduated in 2008, but my kids are as different as night and day…or at least they used to be!

Son just got a call form Willamette… not clear about the content, but they told him about open house, and asked if he might come. His application was probably completed last week. Hope that’s a good sign!

Shrinkrap, I hope it’s a good sign for your son too! My son is a freshman at Willamette this year and he is very happy there: great academics, very friendly, lovely campus. You should definitely consider going up to Oregon to see it if you haven’t done so already. Feel free to ask me any questions (or your son can ask my son via Facebook if he’s interested).

Thank you!

My first impression is “yay!” He is motivated to study this weekend! Second thought is, I sure hope he has a shot at playing soccer in college. Soccer is surely the best thing that ever happened to him since he was five years old, MAYBE second to his SAT scores, at least for an African American male…

What’s life like for an African American male there, with a little ADHD of the hyperactive type?

BTW, he has attended the same tiny “Christian” school since he was 3 years old, which is about 8 percent black.

He also LOVES boarding, and a snowboarding club will surely seal the deal.

He also filled out a VIP app to Whitworth.

Shrinkrap, I just sent you a private message.

My daughter got that call a couple of weeks ago. I am guessing that they are calling all students that have shown an interest in the school. We were not home, so we just heard the message, but I am guessing it was a student who called.

It has now been 3 weeks since my daughter sent in the app, we are very ready for an answer :-)

RSD mom; I got it! Thanks!

anotherparent; Good to know. It would be not so nice if they invited kids to an open house, and had an inkling they my have declined admission by the time it happened.

My daughter was excited to see a large envelope from Willamette in the mail, only to find it was another Leaders Application.

anyday now, i am sure…

Has anyone heard anything??? It has been nearly 4 weeks since my daughter submitted and I know they have had the transcript over 3 weeks. Kind of though we would have heard by now!

Nothing here, although they wanted “more information” from school, earlier this week.

They sent my D an email saying they were waiting on the transcript. She wrote back and said it had been sent several days earlier, and they replied they did have it. That is how we know they have had it for over three weeks.

I am beginning to doubt their commitment to a quick response :-)
