Learning Communities at SLU

Can anyone enlighten me about the advantages and disadvantages of being in a learning community? My son will be a freshman. He is entering the flight science program. I could try for the Parks College LC. One issue is that on the housing application you have to write down three choices. Obviously, the only one that interests him is the PC LC. That seemed obvious. He wasn’t sure if he should write it down or forget it, wasn’t sure about what percentage of the people in his program might go for that; whether it’s better to just go in “cold” or as part of one of these communities.
Any input would be great.

I’m a current SLU student and I love being a part of a LC. Just over 50% of freshman are in an LC and it is a great opportunity to get to know kids with similar interests. That being said, I really wish I would have decided to go with the honors or social justice LC instead of one focused on my academic concentration. As a result, nearly everyone I am friends with has the same major and career goal…which is great when studying, can get a bit boring now and then. Still, I really really would recommend an LC. I know plenty of kids that wish they were in an LC, but no one that wishes they weren’t.
