Learning Disability

So I’ve had a learning disability throughout high school. On advice of my guidance counselor, I didn’t take any AP or honor courses. Should I disclose my disability in the common so this explained? I’m a bit hesitant because I don’t want it to hurt my chances at admission. Thanks

No. Do not disclose. Most students do not disclose a learning disability and go on to graduate from four year colleges. No worries.

A few comments:
-Having a learning disability will not by definition explain your schedule. Many students with learning issues take a rigorous courseload in HS. IMO would be a mistake to use your learning disability as an excuse.
-Many colleges do not expect applicants to take AP courses - those are the schools you should be applying to. Your HS record needs to demonstrate you can handle the work at each college you apply to.
-Diacloaure of a learning disability in and of itself should not impact college acceptances. You can mention it or not.

I’d say it depends on the school. If it’s a school you really want to attend, but they closely study whether or not you took advantages of the resources (higher classes) available to you, I think it could help disclose why you didn’t do just that. Otherwise, I wouldn’t mention it, because some people might read it as you using your learning disability to make excuses for not trying hard enough, which is obviously not the case.

@Empireapple Had two people tell me that so far because there is a lot of discrimination behind the scenes! Thank you so much!!

@happy1 I agree, you’re right. I don’t use it as an excuse. I already mentioned the main reason for the schedule lacking the courses. Well, I plan to apply to many school! NYU and Fordham are my tops.

@amb000 Exactly. Thanks so much

You guys have really helped. I will apply to all the schools and shoot my shot!

Good luck!

@amb000 Appreciate that a lot

Absolutely give those schools a shot. Just be sure to also apply to match and safety schools that appear affordable and that you would be excited to attend. Good luck.

@happy1 Wow! I love you guys. To be honest, this was bit of a test as well. I actually applied in 2017 with no AP and honor courses (not disclosing my learning disability) and got accepted to both Fordham and NYU! I really wanted to see if someone would say that it’s completely impossible to get in top tier schools like these without the courses. Also, I decided to take a gap year to do some pretty incredible things and apply to some more schools this time around :slight_smile: Thanks again for not discouraging someone and being very helpful.

If you’ve already applied and been accepted, what’s the purpose of this thread? Are you applying to schools that are more selective than Fordham and NYU? They may wonder why you didn’t take the most rigorous program offered by your school.

As I’ve said, I’m applying again @austinmshauri I am applying to schools that are more selective. Don’t worry! I have a pretty good reason. It’s all in my essays and application. Thank you though!

I do wish you the best …but I don’t appreciate your giving only part of your story and then asking volunteers to this site to spend time replying to your post so you could give us “a bit of a test”. It is disrespectful to those who who come to CC to try to help people through the college application process.

MODERATOR’S NOTE; Posting as a “bit of a test” is considered deceptive posting and is not allowed. Closing thread.
