Least Impacted Engineering Major?

I know that all Engineering Majors are extremely impacted, but what is the least impacted? Are there majors that are less competitive than others?

Also, I read on Cal Poly’s lacrosse website that a coach can give recommendations to the admissions department:

“Since we are not considered a varsity athletic program by the university, the Cal Poly Lacrosse Team cannot offer scholarships or make admissions decisions. However, we will gladly assist you if you have questions about the admissions process, and can offer recommendations for potential recruits, which may help gain acceptance into the university.”

How much influence do you think a coach has on admissions?

That is a good question. I am sure it varies year to year. I think Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical are two of the most difficult to get into. Some of the less popular majors, such as Materials (what my son is doing) is also one of the smallest, so fewer students get into the program.

I think the most popular are:
Mechanical
Aeronautical
Civil
Electrical
Computer

and less popular:
Materials
Biomedical (becoming popular)
IME
General

(Just my opinion)
I understand why you are asking about this, but remember to look into the program you want to study. My son read through all of the majors and he chose the one that sounded the most interesting to him. He was a strong candidiate for all of them, but wanted to get into one he liked. It is very difficult to switch out of majors, but I would think that you will be able to move within the engineering majors somewhat.

I am not sure about the second part of your question, but hopefully someone else will know. I did not realize that athletes get recommendations.

Best of luck to you!

I think the least impacted engineering majors are general and industrial engineering. Maybe materials and evironmental?

Dunno about your sports question.

momofmv and Socal70 are both correct!

When I was at SOAR’s advising and class picking sessions last week (for transfer students at least), there were only two people at the BMED/IME table (same table) and each major only had one person. There were about 80 people in total in the room.

Here’s a breakdown at the advising and class picking sessions:

The most heavily filled tables were Civil/Environmental (same table), Mechanical, Aero, and Electrical.

I saw about five people at the General Engineering table and probably about six people at the Software Engineering/Computer Science table.

My son will be trying out for the lacrosse team in the fall. The coach can’t really get you into the school solely based on lacrosse but he will answer questions you have about he school and the program.Fill out the recruiting form on the lacrosse website [Cal Poly Lacrosse](http://www.cplax.com) and have your coach email him on your behalf. When you get into the school email him and let him know that you got in. He will put you on the list and you will then get emails on conditioning, try-out dates…This fall they have 40 returning players and 20 freshman that he had heard from. There could be more freshman trying out. He is only going to have a team of 40 players and some freshman will redshirt.

My son is also an engineering major. He chose general because we had heard that he would have a better chance of getting in. In general, you can also specialize in an area not offered-alternative energy. He also applied early decision to increase his chances. He chose Cal Poly because of engineering and they have a good lacrosse team. Don’t know if this all true but it worked for him. Having good grades and test scores help too.

I enjoyed AP Biology my sophomore year and am really interested in Biomedical Engineering. I’m glad to hear that it is one of the less popular majors.

I got a 31 on the ACT and have ~4.35 cumulative weighted GPA. What do you think my chances are?

SRLAXMOM: I want to go to Cal Poly for the same reasons as your son. I’m a little worried that the academic workload + lacrosse commitment might be a bit much, though.

^^with those stats, you have a good chance at getting in.

We/he is worried about the same thing. Time will tell. They start practicing the second week of school for Fall Ball. It’s a chance for them to observe everyone for Spring. They have three practices a week and maybe even Sat.It sounds like a big commitment.

With your score and grades it would seem that you would likely get in. You never know what they look for.Early decision would let them know you are serious about Cal Poly.
