Cannot seem to find this information but know the amazing CC people will know -- if a student takes a leave of absence, does the repayment of the Stafford Loan begin immediately, do they still get the 6-month grace period, or does everything just "freeze" in place during the leave? Any information appreciated. Thanks.

If the student does not return to school within six months of the last day of classes, the loan goes into repayment … and that uses up the loan’s grace period. If it is later deferred for school enrollment, it becomes payable immediately after the next time the student graduates, leaves school, or drops below half time. This applies even if the student is on an approved LOA.

When it is time to repay subsequent loans, the student can contact the lender to ask for forbearance to try to realign the repayment of the loans. Interest would accrue during forbearance. This is a pretty informative site that discusses grace periods and forbearance: [SLCS - Student Loan Counseling Service, Inc.](http://www.slcsloanhelp.com/frequently_asked_questions.aspx).
