Hey my grandfather graduated from JHU way back in 1938. Will this help out my application?

You’ll get an official answer from AdmissionsDaniel, but here’s what I would say based on what I’ve heard over the past few years: legacies do matter (and I’m pretty sure grandparents are considered legacy), but it’s probably not going to turn your decision one way or another. If you’re application is well below the standard for admissions, having a legacy is unlikely to boost it up to the acceptance pile.

To my knowledge (I’m an alum, not an admissions officer), legacy from a parent or sibling counts, but it is a very minor factor (think of it as a tie-breaker) absent serious intervention by the development people (i.e., major donors get special consideration everywhere although no one likes to talk about it for obvious reasons). I suspect that legacy from a grandparent counts even less although it certainly doesn’t hurt.
