Is there such a thing as a legacy at Berkeley? Can you even include this on your application?

UCs don't look at legacies (:( i know, i could be 3rd generation and yet it doesn't matter)

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Thanks.

You should write about it in your essay, or somehow get it into your essay. Cal is the only UC that really pays attention to your essays.

Legacy by itself doesn't mean much of anything, whether we're talking about Berkeley, the Ivies, Stanford, or anyplace else.

Where legacy does matter is if the legacy is connected with a strong pattern of alumni donations and/or if the legacy family is famous, like a Kennedy. And the fact is, while Berkeley doesn't run a formal legacy program the way that most other schools do, if you happen to be an extremely high profile legacy candidate (either you're really really famous or your family is ready to give some ridiculous amount of money), then there's always a way. You go through UC Regent's special consideration. Still doesn't guarantee admission, but clearly the more famous you are and/or the more money you're prepared to give, the harder it will be for them to reject you.
