My Grandfather attended Harvard way back in the 40's, he was an assistant professor at the school for 5 years, and was a well-respected alum. Does that carry any weight on an application?

No, on the application, they don't even ask you where your grandparents went to college--only your parents.

What if your mother went to one of Harvard's grad schools? Does that count as legacy? (BTW, she has never donated any money, though).

does that count?

My understanding of Harvard's definition of legacy: father or mother attended Harvard/Radcliffe College. Period.

A legacy from my school (parent) was rejected from Harvard, not even waitlisted. Very strong applicant, accepted to Yale.
