Does it count as legacy if you have a somewhat distant relative(dad's mom's bro's daughter) who currently goes to grad school at a university?

No. It doesn’t even count as a legacy if your parents graduated from the graduate school of the college you are applying to.

check it anyways and let the admissions officers decide if you have legacy or not.

I don’t know of any schools that consider cousins as legacy, however there are a number of them that do count parents graduating from a graduate school of that college. Some do not. Some include grandparents. Some do not. Depends upon the school.

@viphan: Your post (#1) is entirely false for many elite, most-selective LACs and National Research universities. While I agree it is correct for some institutions, it is FAR from universally acurate. I respectfully suggest that “broad statements” of this type are a disservice to the CC community.

@TopTier Oops, my apologies. All the schools I have applied to neither takes legacy into consideration nor only when the student’s parents graduated from the institution the student is applying to (ei: college to college ONLY etc).

Besides which, the “legacy” relationship OP has to the school as per his description can be safely ignored.

Feeling bored tonight OP?
