Legacy

My daughter is interested in applying to Emory, which is great since both my husband and I are graduates.

While I feel confident that she will get in on her own steam, does the fact that she is a "double legacy" ever play a role in admissions decisions?

I would say that it definitely plays “a role”. How much of a role? That’s a question I can’t answer.

I will say that familiarity with what makes Emory unique is something that has traditionally been heavily emphasized among applicants. So, I would image that having two alumni as parents would absolutely help your daughter to have that perspective.

Aside from that, there is a place on the application (or at least there was several years ago when I filled it out) where they ask you what affiliations you have with the university. They do ask about faculty, staff, and alumni relationships–so they do care about it.

I know this is a bit vague, but I hope it helps.

Hi! To answer your question I would like to start by full-heartily agreeing with skribe! However, I would like to stress that Legacy has the most impact in ED 1/2 where the student shows that because she is a Legacy she really loves the school and wants to go to Emory. From my talks with admission office folk, I would say it does not play much, if any, role in RD admissions.

Hmmmm, that’s interesting theatregeek234 that you say it doesn’t play much role in RD admissions. It seems like it should play a role whether Emory is your absolute 1st choice or not. My daughter has applied to (and already gotten into) some excellent choices, but decided she wanted to also have Emory as an option. It’s not that it’s not her first choice… it’s just that right now, she is undecided and doesn’t have a first choice at all, simply because all the schools are great and she could be happy at any of them.

So yes, she’s applying RD. I do think she has the credentials to get in on her own, but the double legacy factor will hopefully be the cherry on top of the sundae for the admissions folks!!!
