Legacy??

Some schools are really big with legacy (i.e. UPenn) and I would like to know how much my dad have been a Tufts alum from their med school could help me out. I do have pretty good stats, a 96 gpa all honors/aps, competitive high school, 1450 sat I score, 3 SAT IIs 700+, and very good ecs.

Your going to get into this school without the Legacy anyways...

I would be shocked, not just suprised, I'm talking about full blown paralysis, cold sweats, inability to control my own bowels, STRAIGHT UP 4 MONTHS IN A HOSPITAL BED SHOCKED if you aren't accepted.

Shoot you can have my place, I'm trying to get to Georgetown from here anyway.

You're probably in, but as with anything, weird things happen. Alumns don't always guarantee anything, even with high stats.

I think that the acceptance rate for legacies is about 35% or so. Not exactly sure.

The admissions committee said that legacy will give you a bit of an edge, but they were quite clear that it isn't going to really help you - "If you're not qualified, we're not going to let you in unless your parents have a building named after them or something." It seems as if legacy helps to distinguish you from the bunch (i.e. if they are going to take three out of the 50 of you and can't decide).

I think you're in- but then again strange things always happen. in this case a.ka. tufts syndrome

i don't think it would be tufts syndrome, that wouldn't make any sense. I also personally think Tufts Syndrome really exists. It's just a matter of common sense when dealing with an applicant who makes an effort or not.

I even wrote the optional essay to show my enthusiam over Tufts and my desire to come here.

illmaticmindstate, i have a question? What made you want to transfer from Tufts as it seems you are, however, I am not quite sure.

I wasn't saying this was a case of tufts syndrome, just that no one is ever assured a spot at any college.

"illmaticmindstate, i have a question? What made you want to transfer from Tufts as it seems you are, however, I am not quite sure"

My reason for wanting to transfer less than 4 weeks after arriving are the following:

I want to devote my life to the study of the Near East...my dream is to become a diplomat or ambassador or maybe work for the CIA. Tufts has a Middle Eastern Studies program which is quite good...its a broad focus on History, Art, Religion, etc...however the Arabic and Hebrew language programs are noticably sub par here, as they are at 95% of the schools that offer a Near Eastern Studies major.

If I'm going to make a career out of this, which I hope to do, than I am going to need to have a mastery of the languages of the Near East...that is something that I don't believe to be possible at Tufts. I need to transfer in order to get into an Arabic/Hebrew immerision program

Tufts is an excellent school. Its a good fit for me, but not a pefect fit.

Ill ~ not to offer advice that is entirely unwelcome - but have you thought about cross-registering at Harvard? Do they have enough of the languages you want?

Whats cross registering?

any classes that aren't offered here you can take at Harvard.

Well I looked on the Harvard wepsite and I didn't see an intensive Arabic program, but I guess I could email them and ask.

Really what I want is to be studying Arabic full time, I take private lessons at the Boston Language Institute but thats only for 3 hours a week...I need something permenant, extensive and intensive...unfortunately there is ONE school, thats right ONE school in the entire country that offers an intensive Arabic program

Thats Georgetown...oh great

Well good luck in your endeavors! It's too bad that Tufts couldn't offer you what you wanted.

Yeah I know...and I just got here!

Well anyways theres about a 70% chance of me staying here...Georgetown is massively hard to get into :(

for course listings. Scroll down until you see "Arabic," which is hidden... I would say it's about 40% of the way down.

Holy smokes!

Thanks girl! Do you know how I would go about cross registering for classes as well, is there a webpage, or someone I should talk to here at Tufts?

Thank you so much...I would hug you but you might get offended ;) Muuuaaah!

Hi,

Unfortunately, you can not cross register at Harvard as an undergrad, only the fletcher and graduate students are allowed to do so. Tufts undergrads can cross-register at BU, BC, Brandeis, and Northeastern. For more info see here: http://ase.tufts.edu/bulletin/liberal-info.html

However, here are some links that might be of interest to you:
Arabic at BU: http://lang.bu.edu/programs/alacarte/other/#Arabic
Arabic and Hebrew at BC: http://www.bc.edu/offices/stserv/academic/schools/cas/sl/courses/undergrad/
Northeastern: Not really available
Brandeis: One of the best Hebrew Depts in the area, http://www.brandeis.edu/departments/hebrew/ Additionally, very strong Arabic program.

Additionally, you can always study abroad in an Arabic speaking country and reach the level of fluency you desire. This is your undergraduate degree, which is your foundation. Grad School is more applicable to the things you aspire to achieve.

Just my 2cents.

Vlad

LOL!

Talk to the department head - or ask an Arabic professor to tell you where to go. Tufts doesn't officially cross-register with Harvard, but they'll let you arrange something and transfer credits. Do that BEFORE signing up for the courses.
