Legal Name Problem

Hey. On my SATs, high school transcript, SAT IIs, awards, and pretty much everything I have ever done I have a name different than the legal name on my birth certificate and social security card.

On the Common App it asks for your Legal Name as it appears on your official documents. If I put that, however, I'm scared that they won't get any of my information since they won't know its mine because of the different names.

What I plan on doing is writing my name on my SATs, etc, in the name box on the app, and then in the special circumstances box saying that my legal name is different and give them it incase they needed to verify my SSN or do a background check.

Is this a good idea? I need to submit the application today so any quick responses will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Put your legal name as it is. In the preferred name box, put the name that you go by.

I am in a similar situation…my birth certificate, SS card, and ACT scores have my legal first name, but my HS transcripts and awards have the name I go by, my middle name.

You could write in the additional info box just to clarify any confusions adcoms may have.

All the best!
