Legislation allowing universities to set own tuition rates.

Thanks costax! Honestly, books shouldn’t be that expensive.

Check amazon.com, half.com, chegg, ebay, and other students before going to the UBookstore to buy your textbooks.

Hmm that’s very telling.

Thanks costax!

In Costax’s post it says “Estimated Tuition and Fees $9,866”. The Estimated part is because the exact amount has not been identified yet, but they wanted to give people a general idea of what to expect.

p.s. regarding books…sometimes I rent from bookrenter.com (there’s also chegg.com). good deal, and the books ive gotten have always been in really good condition

Yeah, it’s certainly subject to variation. Last year’s tuition was $8,701, meaning the new estimation is slightly over a 13% increase. The new bill just passed by the state legislature means it could increase more, but that would also likely require a new calculation of all financial aid distributed. I can’t imagine the estimate being too far off from the exact number…hopefully.

Dear Student:

You have most likely heard of the passage of House Bill 1795 which
grants tuition setting authority to the University while requiring
additional financial aid commitments. While this bill is on its way
to the Governor for final passage, Washington’s Legislature is still
in session and the exact amount of state funding to the University
will be unknown until the final state budget is passed. These
developments mean that the University’s Board of Regents will neither
be able to establish tuition rates, nor calculate the level of
institutional resources available for financial aid until June or July.

Please be aware that the UW’s responsibility to provide additional
financial aid to help our incoming and continuing students most in
need of assistance remains not only our highest institutional priority,
but a legal requirement outlined in House Bill 1795. As we analyze the
amount of tuition revenue needed to maintain our quality educational
experience, we will also determine the additional financial aid that we
can offer students to help them manage tuition increases while attending
the UW.

If you are an incoming student with an award already, please note that
we will send you a revised award once tuition and fees are set. This
revised award will include any additional financial aid that we can
offer you.

If you are a continuing student, we will prepare your award in July with
the correct amount of tuition and fees and new levels of financial aid
available.

If you are a student who plans to attend summer quarter, please complete
the summer aid application on MyUW if you have not done so already. We
plan to prepare awards for summer students in early June, and we will
most likely list your summer quarter award only at that time. We will
follow with an award revision for additional quarters at a later date.

I know this is a time of heightened financial anxiety as you hear about
tuition increases in the news and it is our priority to get accurate
information out to you as soon as possible. Tuition rates will be made
available on the Office of Planning and Budgeting’s website as soon as
they are available. Please check your UW email account regularly for
any new messages from the Office of Student Financial Aid and contact
us with any questions about the financial aid process.
