Lehigh class of 2015

zephyr15: I believe that 100 Dean’s Scholarship are offered every year to incoming Freshmen.

Congrats!

Out of curiosity, what were you daughters stats like?

Could I ask how much the deans scholarship was and her stats

Scholarship is $10,000/year, renewable for 4 years if she maintains a 3.0 gpa.

Relevant stats.

GPA 3.7 ish unweighted, 4.5 ish weighted
School doesn’t rank – but probably around top 5% +/-, in a very competitive Public HS.

SAT – 750 ish on the Math and Reading, a bit lower on the writing (one sitting)
SAT II – Comparable
ACT – 34 (one sitting)

AP Chem 5, AP Calc BC 5 – plus others – 4s and 5s.

Female Engineering Candidate

Extra-curriculars – we think good, shows leadership and long term commitment/success in main activity.

Essays – We were very happy with Common App., and thought the Lehigh Supplements were strong, but I suspect everyone feels this way.

Demonstrated interest in Lehigh – Campus visit.

Anyone else receive a scholarship? Are they a rarity? Is it worth is to appeal?

Our D received the $10,000 Dean’s scholarship and $3,000 performing arts scholarship. She did not receive any need based aid - we are finding it hard to justify spending $43,000 a year for Lehigh, compared to $23,000 for Purdue (she got a $16,000 Trustee OOS scholarship from them). We love Lehigh, but we also have another child to send through college.

Congratulation Suebinor! That is a wonderful award. It is hard for those of us who do not receive financial aid, very hard. For my son, being in engineering, it is worth it due to the reputation of the school in the engineering and graduate community. Also, he intends to become a Gryphon which is a savings of 10K or so a year. Each family has to make their own decisions, but you should be proud of those awards as they are rare at Lehigh. You must have an exceptionally talented child!

@mumof2boyz - thanks for your kind words. Yes, we know that getting any kind of merit scholarship at Lehigh is exceptional, so we are very proud of our D!! I truly believe that most kids will be successful where ever they go. She has to make a quick decision today, since they invited her to campus for Diversity Weekend and of course, they will pick up the airfare. As a family, we decided we would not have Lehigh pay for an air ticket, or send our daughter there for a weekend, if it were not truly an option. I now think she was invited for Diversity weekend because she got the performing arts scholarship. (they only awarded 3 of those). Thanks to everyone chiming in. It is so great to know that there are other parents/kids struggling with the same issues!!

Hi Suebinor
I absolutely think she should come for the weekend. It’s the reason they invite you. Things may change in the future, I would absolutely come. Think of all the athletes they flew in last fall. They all came for the visit!

Suebinor, She should go!!! Visiting and spending time at Lehigh is what made my son’s decision for him above other schools with far better financial offers. Give Lehigh the opportunity to show you and your daughter what it has to offer - there are no strings or obligations, they just want the opportunity to show her what they are all about!

My daughter wants to send in her commitment today, after receiving the financial aid grant in the admissions package. Lehigh offered her the best deal of all the places she was admitted. We’re 95% certain that she will be attending in the fall. She is also attending the diversity weekend in April.

suebinor:

No downside to your D flying in. Also, if Lehigh turns out to be her first choice, and she’s going to decline based on cost, you have nothing to lose by calling the financial aid office, and asking whether they can do something.

My very strong guess is that Lehigh won’t be able to help, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask.

My son also received the Dean’s Scholarship for $10,000. We were surprised, we did not know that Lehigh gave merit money. He had 2210 Sat and a 3.95 average.

Wow!!! Just got my package and received Academic Merit Scholarship (full tuition) Sooo happy because Lehigh is my number 1!

yep…$40660. it is on their website too :)

Congratulations Corj93, that is rarely given!

We just wrote our deposit check for Lehigh :)

Lehigh is great, but to those of you that got wait listed like my D things tend to work out. D got accepted at Lafayatte on a grant for full tuition. D will probably accept this offer. Lafayette is also one very good school. Good Luck to all.

Risky to say that 'round these parts… :P

Congrats to your D though, seriously, Lafayette is actually a great school as well. No matter how much I hate them. ;)

==

Congrats to all who have been accepted so far. Attend the Accepted Students Days for sure.

For those of you who have sent in deposits already, the no. 1 piece of advice I can give you all for the immediate future is to sign up for a preLUsion as soon as they offer them (July?).

For those of you waitlisted, I sincerely wish you all the best of luck. As Eleanor500 said, everything will work out.
