Anyone have any sense of the standards (scores, GPA, etc.) for merit money at Lehigh?
Does ED versus RD impact? Program choice? Looking at IBE or Engineering

I am not sure of the standards exactly, but I applied last year (class of 2015) received an academic merit scholarship, so I can at least give you something to go off of:

ACT: 34
SAT II: 690 Math II 730 Bio M
GPA : 4.0, 4.7 (W)
Rank: N/A (top 5%)
8 AP classes+more honors, received AP Scholar with Distinction
I had a good amount of extracurriculars in sports and academics, 200+ hours of community service.
I also met with my admission counselor a couple times (at my school and interview)

Applied RD to the engineering school

hope that helps a little!

I think it most likely varies depending upon who else applies. My son received one (he is class of 2014).

His stats:
SATs 780 CR 790 M
GPA: 4.26
Very competitive private high school - did not rank
8 AP, AP Scholar w/ distinction, National Merit Commended
Sports, music, tons of community service
Engineering RD

What amt of money are the merit awards you’ve received? And if anyone else wants to report their stats, it would be very helpful. Thanks!

I applied this year for the class of 2017 (5 year arts & engineering program) and was given the Deans scholarship (10k/yr). Some of my friends ended up getting full or half tuition scholarships, so I assume those are the normal values…
my stats:
SAT is 2180; GPA 4.13; Top 5% (rank not directly reported)
I think I stood out with my essay (which was really risky-- it had pictures and word art etc.) and my resume (two published essays, research, tons of extracurriculars with leadership, community service, and nerdy but awesome summer programs)
I visited a lot, so I don’t know if that held any influence, but it’s definitely important! One of my friends (who will likely be attending the management and technology program at UPenn next year, still debating a few ivies) was waitlisted at Lehigh because she didn’t show interest and they thought she was “overqualified” and wouldn’t attend.

Wow, you all sound like outstanding students. This is so helpful. Are the merit scholarships awarded just for one year and then you have to reapply? How do you like the engineering program at Lehigh? Are you all happy with your choice to be there?

Is the party reputation of Lehigh accurate? How hard is it to keep your nose in the books with the tough curriculum while also trying to keep a balanced social life?

I also got the Dean’s Scholarship. My SATs are CR660 W710 and M760. My weighted GPA is 4.3, unweighted is 3.9.

@livn487 my scholarship was for full tuition. I didn’t reapply for anything this semester, i am pretty sure all of the awards are for four years. I don’t think i could be happier with my choice to come to Lehigh, it has been such a great year and i can’t believe it is almost over!
I actually have switched out of engineering and into arts and sciences for next semester so i can major in biology instead of bioengineering. This had to do with my own interests and not anything that i specifically didn’t like about the engineering school.
It is definitely possible to manage your academics and have a social life, especially your freshman year. I know as you get older the workload increases for most majors, but I have never heard anybody say that their workload is unmanageable. I know a few girls on my hall who have been going out at least 4 days a week since August. There also are also some who don’t go out at all but are still able to have a really good time. I would say that most nights you can find a party somewhere, and that is probably where the party reputation comes in. But with that, there is no pressure to go out when you have work to finish because you know you will be able to have just as much fun the next night or week. For the most part, everyone is able to complete all of their assignments and still have enough time left over to spend with friends and have fun, and that is one of the many reasons why Lehigh is so great!

My son has a Merit Scholarship for $10,000 annually. The only requirement is that your GPA can be be lower than 3.0. My son went to a competitive public high school. He was not involved with high school activities but had an internship with a local non-profit. He took as many APs as his schedule would allow. His GPA was 3.8. His ACT scores were 34 in Math and 34 in Science. We travel quite a ways to visit Lehigh in his junior summer. He applied regular admission. He was sent a likely letter that offered to provide him with a trip to Lehigh for Diversity Weekend. He went and had a wonderful time. He is now a sophomore at Lehigh and very involved in his fraternity and is still able to make the Dean’s List. - over 20% of his brothers are also on the Dean List. Have to say we are very happy our son chose to get involved with the fraternities!

I was wondering if anyone knows if you can get a merit scholarship if you apply ED to Lehigh, or is it “game over” if they accept you. Do they feel at that point that they don’t have to give you any money? How does that work?

Hey tensoc2,

I applied ED1 to Lehigh and the university took good care of me financially. I got a large aid package with a few smaller Lehigh scholarships thrown into the mix. It made Lehigh the most affordable option out of all of the other schools I applied to.

I know how a lot of people might think that an ED student would get screwed with financial aid, but I’ve found that it’s actually opposite - at least in my case. I think Lehigh wants to actually reward ED students with large aid packages. ED students are also the first round of students to be looked at for scholarhips and aid, so it works out very well for us.

Best,
