"Investment Banking Interview Questions

Why investment banking versus sales and trading? What is the difference?

Give an example of your quantitative skills.

In what area of investment banking do you want to work?

Tell me about the time you worked the hardest in your life.

Tell me about a time you had to develop relationships with others.

Do you follow the market? For how long? Do you invest?

Describe a situation in which it was difficult to obtain information you needed, and how you managed to be successful.

Do you follow any stocks? Which ones and why?

What was Morgan Stanley's stock price yesterday?

Describe an instance in which you've had a significant impact on a situation, either inside or outside your job."

This is just the first batch: It gets a lot harder after this.

Either buy or download (if your school has free copies) of Vault.com and Wetfeet.com's Investment Bank booklets: they have sample questions, responses, and tell you what you need to know.

Good reading:

"Goldman Sachs- The Culture of Success" by Lisa Endlich
"The Running of the Bulls: Inside the Cutthroat Race from Wharton to Wallstreet"

Also read Monkey Business. Since this is the #4 and a bulge bracket ibank, I highly recommend research on Lehman, its history (how they partnered with GS to underwrite a century ago but are bitter enemies now), and sharpen up on quantitative skills.

Dress: Suit, always. Wear a watch.
Leave all cellphones off, don't be cocky, but take control of the interview.

Remember that if this is a multi person interview, 1 MD might be playing the bad cop.

Also, be honest, and don't lie about anything. The interview's purpose is to find the best candidate for the job, and the best job for you. If you lie and get past it... you won't be comfortable there later on.

Congrats on his round 1 interview btw. Many Ivy's get it... but it may be a grueling process, with 3-4 rounds, super saturdays (where you are flown to NY for a whole day of interviewing), cocktail parties, and sell days.
