Lesbians at Grinnell

Hey so I’m very interested in Grinnell college but I’m a lesbian and I’ve heard the dating scene for gay students is very small there due to the size of the school and can get kinda incestuous (everyone’s slept with each other’s exes kinda thing). Is this true? Can lesbians find luv at Grinnell?

Grinnell enrolls roughly 900 women. I am sure that between the exclusively lesbian, bisexual and questioning population, you will have well over 100 women to date, which is more than any of us can wish for!

That being said, your dating pool would be considerably larger at a larger university or in a college located in a more populated area. But if Grinnell is your first choice, I don’t think you need to worry about your dating options.

Small LACs like Grinnell will offer you a socially rich environment where you will find plenty of friends and an active love life if you choose. What some people see as a comfortable closeness, others see as “incestuous”.

If this worry is something that other people are warning you about, just keep in mind that their criteria may be different than yours. If a really large dating pool is one of your criteria, then consider applying to larger colleges or LACs in urban areas where you can meet people outside of school: Barnard and Macalester come to mind.

I’m worried about the exact same thing, haha. I don’t know how true it holds for same sex couples, but here’s a really well-written article I found about dating at Grinnell: https://www.grinnell.edu/news/intro-grinnellian-dating
