Probably a better discussion to have offline.
FWIW, we all live and learn. Every single one of us*. Hindsight can be a great teacher. In school I remind kids that they can learn more from their mistakes than they do from lessons as our brains are not good at letting go of mistakes. I still remember some things I missed from my own high school days several decades ago. I don’t really recall much I got right on any test (with a couple of exceptions).
Then I remind the students to learn from mistakes, but don’t dwell on them. That’s something I also repeat to myself over and over again when I find myself dwelling on some (sigh).
Regardless, don’t think I’m picking on you. You had just asked for examples. Prior to that I didn’t want to get super specific.
*Or at least we all make mistakes and hopefully learn from them!
I’d like to ask if any weight is given if a particular poster is flagging another poster’s comments. As to if that is a good use of flagging or is a personal vendetta?
And let’s not pretend that hasn’t happened
I remember that. I find deleting posts like Roycroft’s RBG post infantilizes your audience. Really? You don’t think this group of lawyers/doctors/engineers/authors/professors can’t handle this very mainstream opinion? (And if some flagged it, that’s almost irrelevant. Flagging is not dispositive).
Ramblings, by definition, Ramble! And while the topic may have generated controversy elsewhere, it had not on that thread. I just wouldn’t be so quick to decide there’s a problem before there actually is a problem.
Yes, we take that into account. It is a fairly rare occurrence for users to report others as part of a personal vendetta.
Why are you shouting “encourage”?
I’ll admit that it’s a rare occurrence
As I noted before, while one of us read every flag report, we do not do what the reporter wants in all cases. If no further action is warranted, none is taken.
And yes, we do notice if there is a trend with a reporter.
I think the RBG thread is a great example. It’s a topic that needs to be discussed. So many topics are shut down (or not started at all) because it might get “political” or maybe actually generate debate.
I remember some very long time posters who have left that I really miss—some spent time banned—and I certainly didn’t agree with all their opinions but I looked forward to a lively discussion. They were articulate and smart and made me think . I miss that.
CC has an educated base from all over that makes debatable topics that much more enlightening. Conversing with people who live under different conditions economically/urban/rural (including their political leaders) broadens the discussion we can’t get from talking to a neighbor nearby.
Asking for examples of posts that have been deleted and therefore, at least in many cases, are not fully retrievable seems a bit disingenuous.
But whatevs, I’m kind of cranky today so I’ll keep some of my thoughts on this to myself for fear of legitimately crossing a boundary and just be, as the kids say, here for the ratio.
Thank you everyone for your feedback! As the OP, you’ve given me A LOT to think about. I’m going to pause this thread so I can carefully review all the posts and perspectives here. I’ll also meet with the mods to discuss our moderating strategy (I’m actually in the process of updating our moderating guide). If you have more to add, feel free to send me a PM. What an amazing, thoughtful community we have. I’m so excited about the future of CC and ensuring our community can thrive!
Remember, send me a PM if you have more thoughts!
