Let's compile a list of scam awards/honors so the others don't fall for them!

We sometimes receive information about “National” awards or honor lists. I personally have trouble discerning the legit from the scam. So far, I’ve heard that the National Dean’s List and National Honor Roll are scams/worthless for colleges/or simply unfit to be placed in the “awards” section of your application. Let’s compile a list! (Copy and add on to the list)

This might get tough. Some programs advertise as being great for admissions, thought they are not, but they offer an otherwise valuable experience. Take NSLC for example. Are these "scams"?

I personally enjoyed my experiences in NYLC two summers ago but being great for admissions, hmmm, that's a tough one to call. Though who's who is def on this list.

is National Honor Society the same as NHR?

No, they're differnt, National Honor Society is the good one, it's composed of chapters in high schools around the us and admission to the group is usually based on a certain GPA and a demonstration of service, whereas NHR is just another one of these scam books that feed off of overly proud parents

I got a NYLC invitation on Law like a month or 2 ago. Pretty weird.

I got an invite to GYLC, I'd lump it into the above. Basically any award or honor or distinction that wants you to pay money would fit in that category.

The most useful practical skill I learned at NYLC: how to tie a tie - courtesy of my roommate.

I always wondered about those NSLC invitations but I never tried it. Did anyone do it? Was it useful?

My friend did a program in Washington D.C. (she got a full scholarship) and she said it was great..but as far as getting into her dream college, it didn't appear to help much.

Now the question is, did she get into her dream college? =P

The various leadership conferences are nothing more than seminars. No honor or prestige, just expensive. And irrelevant to college admissions.

As to its quality, I've heard varying reports.

melli: No, unfortunately she did not get into her dream college :(
