Let's go maryland

GO TERPS! BEAT NAVY!

I would love to say MD will win, but I don't think so.

Game’s going to be on ESPN, too. Go Terps!

While we’re on the topic of sports, I’d just like to add that “The Crew” for men’s soccer games is amazing. I’m just a freshman and I went to the two men’s soccer games this weekend and it’s such a good time. Listening to the things people say to the opposing goalie is hilarious. Tons of school spirit. For those who don’t know what The Crew is, it’s the student fan group for the men’s soccer team. Every home game they sit in the section right behind the opposing team’s goalie, and heckle him the ENTIRE game. There’s tons of Maryland chants, and when we score it’s bedlam. You don’t even have to like watching soccer to enjoy a game here. Just listening/seeing the other fans is awesome. And we have one of the best soccer teams in the nation. We just beat Northeastern 5-0 tonight!

Great game! Sorry pima, but I’m rooting for Boise St. tonight!!!

No problem astro, Bullet was rooting for Tech in his heart, but in his head it was Boise. What a game. I actually felt bad for Tech, but was happy for Boise.

The Terp game was frustrating for Bullet because there were so many times Navy could have changed the game. All he kept muttering over and over was Fridge has to go!

That was an exciting game! Go Terps!
My son was there in the endzone and we tried to catch a glimps of him, but it was all just a sea of red. As a freshman it was a great introduction to the thrill of college sports.

(Don’t want to sound unloyal, but it was more a case of Navy failing to win than Maryland beating them. That one jumping block at the endzone was amazing though.)

You are not being unloyal at all…your belief is why Bullet wants Fridge to go and BULLET is a UMDCP parent who graduated from UMDCP! Anyone being unloyal, than it would be Bullet ;)

As most people know our DD goes to VATECH, we have college flags that we rotate outside. Terp flag was up for the game, as soon as it was done, Bullet went and took that down to put up the Tech flag. The rule in the house is the school that wins stays up until the next game. Tech lost and before they rolled the credits he was back outside putting the Terp flag up again  Not so sure he would have been as quick to do that if the scenario was reversed (Tech winning, Terps losing) :p

^Sounds like a good system.

I know I’m a little light on the UMD lingo, but is Fridge the coach? (How did I guess that?) I read where UMD was interested in buying out his contract after last season but it would have cost the college millions. As a parent paying tuition I can’t argue with that.

Yep, Fridge is the FB coach and Gary is the BBall coach. Yes, last yr they did talk about buying him out. As a parent, I am not necessarily opposed to this because as UMD falls down the ranks, then their games will not be aired nationally. UMDCP actually gets money from television, thus, in the long run it could cost more than buying out the contract. Additionally, if the team stinks, they lose money in ticket sales, apparel, etc. and it will take yrs to rebuild the franchise. Also, it hurts them in recruiting, so the downward cycle keeps going…lower quality players, less wins = even lower quality and more losses.

This too plays into the academic side because some kids want to go to a high quality school with a big team athletic dept. They want that ability to go to big football or basketball games. ACC people are rabid! Many UMD students can get into all ACC schools, and some place this in their decision process since the colleges are on par. Our DD did not do this when she chose Tech, but she told her brother Tech was better than UMD because of their football team, only to be abruptly told by him and every male friend in the ACC football means crap, Basketball is ACC. :D

College football is like the NFL a franchise. Here in No VA, the kids where their intended college shirts on Monday after they win. It is their tradition, and every parent buys into it, those t-shirts make money for the college. If the college goes to even the Toilet Bowl game, they will sell shirts, tickets, etc. and the school makes money off of that.

62-3!!! Wow. Gee, pima, I guess your S has bragging rights over your D’s VATech team…in football??? Who would have thought? (Ha, the season is early…)

astro, talked to DD last night. Simply stated, she was in a foul mood. Particularly after she spent the summer teasing her older bother (the UMD student) that the her school was so much better in football. A couple of “nya-nya-na-na-nya” text messages from her brother last night hasn’t helped her mood. :)

hahahaha :p
