Why does every time an URM posts a chances thread here a flame war starts about affirmitive action. Can we just give them honest advice. There are other thread and other boards for this debate. Regardless of your personal oppinion, Affirmitve Action is a dact of life we should be able to consider in chances threads. It not an URM's fault they benifit, it's the system

P.S. Feel free to debate affirmitive action in this thread.

It is too people's faults if they use the "system" to get into a school. That's like saying, "hmm, I know this [insert item] belongs to someone else, but if other people think I should take it then it must be okay."

It's not.

Affirmative action needs to be downright thrown away. Now, if universities and the government want to support a NEED-based program rather than a SKIN COLOR-based one then I'm all for it. But this racism, and that is precisely what it is, ****es me off. The goal of the civil rights movements wasn't to win minorities extra rights; it was to win EQUAL rights. People shouldn't be evaluated based on their skin color for college admission, or anything else for that matter; they should be evaluated based on merit, hardships faced, and financial need.

"Now, if universities and the government want to support a NEED-based program rather than a SKIN COLOR-based one then I'm all for it"
That's definitely my stance on the issue as well. Also, I'd like to add that my hispanic friend (who got into MIT, Stanford, and Princeton) thinks that Affirmative is an insult to the intelligence of URMs because it basically says that they can't get there on their own. Just trying to add another perspective to this issue..:)

I think it would be obvious if an admissions officer was a racist. I mean, how many Mexicans with high GPAs and perfect SATs could he turn down? How white could the football team get before someone noticed?

We live in a society where thankfully, most people aren't racists, so we don't need to put minorities on this pedestal anymore.

"Somehow people think it's worse to discriminate against Blacks and Mexicans than white people."

I totally agree. If someone at my school calls a white person a "cracka," they won't get in trouble. But God for bid if someone calls a black person "black" they're in trouble. The correct term is "African American" apparently.

First off, nobody cares if you call black people black, the whole "African American" thing died ages ago and only people like Rush Limbaugh still pretend like we're forced to use it. I call black people "black", somehow they don't beat me up or stare at me like I raped a kitten.

Second, if you are white, statistically speaking nobody is taking your spots (see the Princeton AA survey study), so shut up already. Asians experience a slight increase when AA students/athletes/legacies aren't favored, but the increase is so small that chances are you would have been rejected anyway (and if you by any chance fall in this small group odds are your admission is going to be fairly random to a top school, so another elite college probably accepted you). So sorry, but it's not AA's fault you suck.

Why do all of yall think every minority that gets into a selective college is not qualified? Think for a second. 12% of this nation is black but only like 7-8% are at the top schools if that many. So really if ya want to think about it, whites are taking more than thier share of spots. Well maybe I should say Asians oh well ya get my point.

2nd Point
On like the SAT there were only like 250 African Americans who scored a 750+ on either math or verbal in i think 2005. Now that means at the top 25 schools there would only be 20 African Americans in a class of like 2000+. Now some of those high scoring African Americans would not go to a school dominated by other ethinics and very few African Americans. Thus a small black community. So that really would be like 12 at each school. Then factor the fact that admissions to these top schools is so selective. Leaves only 8ish African Americans in a class of like 2000 students. WOW LOOK AT THAT DIVERSITY.

I will tell you now, I would never go to a college with like less than 1% black. I need some other african americans who would be in my same shoes and relate to me. Dont mention if I dont like 1 of the 7 classmates.

I am an African American who is highly qualified w/o help. It is there but I dont expect it to get me into any college.

My favorite quote by MLK: Think about starting a race with a 300 year advantage. or something like it.

Oh WAIT I JUST ADDED FIRE TO THE WAR
SCRATCH EVERYTHING I SAID.
BEING BLACK DOES NOT GIVE YOU AUTOMATIC ADMISSION
