Thoughts about the protest against Wall Street?

NO jobs + worthless education + taxes = We are the 99%

I went to Zuccotti Park, it’s all college kids and pot smokers. They really have no idea what they’re complaining about.

If I didn’t have so much schoolwork, I’d be right there with them all!

Not sure what this has to do with college admissions, but in my opinion, it’s the usual protestors, like the type who protest at the global financial summits. And young college students, who like all college students throughout time, are more liberal than their parents, at least while they are young.

One kid was asked what he was protesting about, and he replied “they are supposed to tell us in a day or two”

Another said that it was because the rich paid too little in taxes, but when she was asked what percentage of the total government revenue the top 1% should pay, she learned that they actually already pay double that amount, so she looked pretty silly.

Another said he was protesting because “the jews” have all the money.

We have elections in this country every two years. Political decisions should be made in an orderly way, not by “occupying” something.

While I deplore the Wall Street bailout, and the fact that the bankers then paid themselves massive bonuses just weeks after they were bailed out, and while I deplore the fact that the money that was originally to go to the distressed homeowners instead went to the banks, ask yourself who ALLOWED this to happen?

Hmmmm.

I am not making a political statement here…just asking the question. I’m not suggesting an answer…

That is up to everyone to come to their own conclusion.

Seems to me that by any impartial, non-political standard, the location of the protests might just be misplaced.

brb majoring in a useless degree (women’s studies, art history, soci/psychology…etc)
brb attending a 10k/semester school instead of a state university
brb taking out big loans
brb expecting a good paying job with such said degree immediately after graduation
brb i am the 99%

They have some points such as the fact that the income gap is widening or that some form of free college education is necessary for our country to be competitive. However they are mostly just hippies who couldn’t make it in school or want to seem cool.

My most awesomely liberal born too late to be a genuine hippy best soul in the world friend went down there yesterday with her family. She found it interesting. I don’t know that I would go down there.

A big part of me wants to just GO there RIGHT NOW… It is SO awesome.

I am the 99%!!!

Some of you have no idea what you’re talking about. Even people with “marketable” degrees aren’t getting jobs. My state school IS $10k a semester and there is virtually no state help. A lot of the protesters around here are teachers, students, etc.

Also those who are long term unemployed can’t find jobs BECAUSE they are unemployed. It’s a very vicious cycle that people can’t break out of. They also don’t have the means to relocate because they’ve been unemployed. They can’t go back to school because it’s too expensive around here.

Now, that’s not to say that there are some people there that want to mooch off the government. There are, obviously, and there are always will be. However, to write them all off with a broad stroke like that is just ignorant. Especially considering most of you are high school students who have barely held a job before (if at all).

I missed this gem. I wasn’t aware that Americans ONLY had a voice during elections. I thought we had this right to protest. Silly me.

Roman:

Protesting is fine. Occupying an area and purposely obstructing people and traffic is more than protesting.

I know I’m not American and I don’t have the right to give my opinion in issues concerning the American people , But please just bare with me.

Look At the US today and the US in the 90’s or even in 2000 , Big difference no ??

The Americans - or at least the “occupy” people - are watching their country fall apart , the economey getting worse , Unemployment rates going up , education getting worse and WORSE , and everything is simply turning into Caos . And all that happened mostly because of a bunch of greedy people who litteraly live in Wall street. And worst ; the government is doing almost nothing to repair the situation. so you don’t want them to occupy wall street ??

You have to understand that these are people who love their country and want the best for their country - though not all of them are showing their love in the right way - , they want to live the " American Dream " just like their parents and even grandparents once did. They simply want a future , a happy future , and they don’t think the government is doing enough to provide that future for them so they decided to step out and get that future by their own hands.

I only hope that the American government understands their message before it’s too late - although I think it’s too too too late now - .

^^ Again , the above comes from a non-American citizen who is watching the situation from thousands of miles away and has only visited the US once in his whole life.

I consider myself a Democrat, but I refuse to show any support for the occupiers. Why? Because they are the same people who stayed home in 2010 and left the political fate of America in the hands of corporate America’s grassroots surrogate, aka the Tea Party. Maybe they’ll smarten up and go to the ballot and choose people, rather than doing nothing and complaining about what you were given.

Let’s be real. Most of the people at the Occupy Wall-Street crap will be protesting next months hot button issue. 90% of them don’t even know what they’re really protesting for.

@futurevpfinance: I don’t really think that’s the case. The people who stayed home were the type of people who don’t care about politics much, except when it comes to big presidential elections. It has always been the case that less than half of voting-age Americans don’t turn up on election day; that’s nothing new. Those people just don’t value their country enough to get up and vote.

Whereas the Occupy Wall Street protesters are taking time off from school/work, going all the way to New York, marching, sleeping on the ground in the park, getting arrested. Do you really think people who couldn’t even be bothered to vote would do all this for what they believe in, less than a year later?

I can’t believe some of the posts on this thread. The right to protest is as sacred as the right to vote; the American protest tradition goes back to before there was an America. It won us our freedom from the British, it brought us women’s suffrage, it brought us Civil Rights. So what if they’re disrupting things a little? These Wall Street robber barons destroyed the economy and then took enormous taxpayer bailouts at our expense. They deserve the full anger and retaliation of the people. So what if some of them are a little crazy, or not as aware as others? I believe these represent a small percentage of the protesters. Of course the media is going to focus attention disproportionately on the crazy/stupid ones if it makes good news. That doesn’t mean the rest don’t have a point. And look at all those Tea Party nuts.

On Saturday I will be going to a local solidarity protest. At the same time I will be registering voters. How great to know that for a couple of hours I will be participating in our democracy 100%.

Hah. Hahahahahahaha!

Excuse me while I go laugh at that, and while some overpaid, useless “public servants” contrive to make it impossible for me to graduate loan-free from college…

[I love it!](http://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2011/10/11/infographic_the_mainstream_medias_guide_to_protesters)

I’m pretty libertine, but all I’ve been seeing from this movement is a bunch of bums pooping on things–things I didn’t even know could be pooped on…

To me, the protests appear to be a partisan liberal democrat affair.

When middle class republicans start participating, I will be more impressed.

In Egypt, all segments of society participated in the protests.

Also, I would be more impressed if the protestors also protested in front of The White House and Congress.
