Let's start a place for class of 2020 MIT hopefuls or something!

I thought I did well on the short answers…
But on my interview I said that I’d heard the MIT dorms were gross… Now my sister denies she said it… Anyways I’d prefer they weight the essays more. I’m not saying he was trying to bait me into slipping up, he was a very nice man actually, but he is a teacher at my schools rival so you never know lol

@qwerytiop Well, yeah… I learned mixed partial differentials and chain rule with partials(? I think)… I am more comfortable with substituting into the integral rather than combining differentials… seriously, if you want to find a simple dw/dt, you have to calculate multiple derivatives and set them all in terms of t… takes too long and involves too much algebra…
Linear Algebra was much less work, though…

I actually don’t know exactly what you are talking about. I still remember Linear Algebra though; lol, I use an Integral/Derivatives table when I need one. haha… And I used to do UIL Math…

@tutututututuru It probably wasn’t that bad. Hopefully the rest of your interview was substantial.

@infiniteCircle I mean, I felt that I said a lot and was polite and showed an interest in science. I was a bit nervous for the first few minutes and that probably showed, but otherwise it was just a normal conversation. I don’t know if that qualifies as “substantial”. Frankly he had like a list of suggested questions and just kinda read them.

@tutututututuru Same here that is how my interview went. I thought I answered well but I was slightly hesitant and nervous. I hope we both did well. Good luck!

Hey Friends, I am starting to worry then. I essentially told my interviewer that I would really like to got to MIT for this and that reasons, and then told him that there are likely a substantial amount of better qualified applicants than me…
Does that reveal a lack of self-confidence?
My interviewer was kind enough to correct me and told me that I had done my best given the opportunities that I had(economically disadvantaged, first gen, immigrated to US 9th grade from third-world, without father and mother).
I definitely don’t lack self-confidence about academic matters; I am graduating top 2% of my class of 800 in a suburban school. I had to get a serious amount of 100s in AP classes(honestly didn’t have much else to do)… It’s just I was(and am even more so currently) nervous about getting into MIT. You see, MIT represents free college to me…
I don’t want to rack up on student loan, and I want a school that focuses on research… so… yeah… I am really nervous… My dream of becoming a Professor!!! If my lack of self-confidence screws me over, I am going to be really upset… Crying on a Wednesday night… before my Physics C final… hope I won’t get deferred or rejected, but I am dying of pessimism…

Is a lack of self-confidence on my admission to MIT that bad?

@infiniteCircle good luck to you too!

@peanut10 lack of confidence? No way dude. That’s just humility. Really. I think you’re reading way too much into this, and I think you have a very, very good shot!

@peanut10 Good luck!

Same goes to all of you. May the force be with you. :slight_smile:

For me, I poured a ton of time into the essays and felt like I really was able to present my true self, despite them being short in length.

One more day!

I’m going to be sick

Hey everyone! I made this account pretty much just to post on this thread, I too applied early action to MIT. I just wanted to say I appreciate all the positivity I see up here, I’m a little nervous but you guys have made me feel a bit better. Good luck everyone!

Does anyone know if (historically) MIT defers a lot of applicants?

Super pessimistic right now. I’m not like looking for encouragement, I’m just saying. Gah

Last year 6519 students applied for early admission to MIT, and they offered early admission to 625 and deferred 4456 of the applicants. As this is the first year ever that international students are able to apply for EA, I would guess that the number of applicants might rise to about 8000, but the number of admitted/deferred applicants will most likely stay about the same (as they can only admit a very small number of international applicants).

MIT defers the vast majority of its applicants… Not good. I might prefer straight rejection just so I know my fate

I’m really nervous about tomorrow. I feel my only real hook is blacksmithing; I haven’t really done any big math/science competitions and have literally horrifically low community service. Anyone know how big not having much of any comm. service would hurt an applicant.

@LandinK Thanks for the info.
@jackrocks800 I hardly have any community service as well. I hope that isn’t a deciding factor!
