Letter from College Professor? Does it mean anything?

A few days ago, I received a letter from a college professor who is the Director of the department of studies that I’m interested in, from WUSTL. He says that a colleague made known of my inerests in the humanities to him. He describes the humanities program to me and says “I am eager to know what your interests are and how you envision your education.” Then he continues to ask me to contact him via e-mail “to tell [him] about [my] plans.” He says he is “especially eager to talk [to me] about” the opportunities provided. He ends the letter by saying that I should visit the school and arrange a meeting with him.

Does this letter mean anything? I would love to study at WUSTL… the letter looks like typical college mail… no fancy paper or anything… just a letter and a brochure. Am I over-analyzing (I know WUSTL is known for sending waaaaay too much mail to prospective students but I’ve never received such a letter from them before)? Or, does this mean they are interested in me as a student? Would it help me get accepted if I communicated with the professor? Regardless, I will not have a chance to meet him in person or visit St. Louis.

I simply think they’re interested in you and what you can offer WUSTL

Meaning: No.
Overanalyzing: Yes
Interested in you: Yes, and 10,000 others
Help getting accepted: specifically? not likely – its purpose is to get you to apply – and of course, an acceptance might come from it. But something special? not at all.

I’d respond. WUSTL cared about interest. The prof might pass on to admissions if you respond (thoughtfully, of course).

Colleges are all clamoring for humanities kids. I’d respond with eagerness if I were you.

A thoughtful response is in order but in no way does it guarantee admission.
