Letter from Director (UCB)

i don't know if anyone has seen this, but i figured i'd post it.

+60 applications! whoa nelly

http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=2840

so projecting only a 26% acceptances ....Ima sleep well tonight

damn.... after reading that i am getting nervous...

aw crap... I don't like this... I know that I'm sort of a fringe case so I'm just gonna prepare for disappointment.

But wouldn't the college you're applying to factor into your chances for admission? Ex.: Hass's acceptance rate is like 7% or something whereas for the College of Letters and Science it's 40% or somewhere around there?

thanks for posting this btw

no it's not.... social science is 25% impacted... literautre and art is 40something percent... not all College of Letter and science is 40percent..

Ah, okay. So if my major's impacted then I have less of a chance of getting in.

... some sort of literature on transferring to Berkeley I got from my CC said 40% acceptance rate for L&S, gotta be wrong then

yeah, i'm not sure how that works. I think the number you got for the 40% acceptance rate for L&S is the average among acceptance rates between all the divisions in L&S, based off of the 2007 transfer flyer on the berk website.

so correct me if i'm wrong, but if you apply to say, the social science division within L&S (25% acceptance for 2007), you still have a slightly lower than 25% chance (because the overall transfer admittance rate was roughly 1 in 4 based off of 2008 data vs. 1 in 3 from 2007)?

Well this means our admissions decisions have already been made. Thats so crazy, I am very nervous about April 30th with hearing how competitive Berkeley was this year.

"Well this means our admissions decisions have already been made. "

Maybe they're just estimating how many acceptances they are going to make based on how much space is available.

I think those are projected numbers.

You right I was probably jumping the gun with how damn excited and nervous I was. And damn this year they only admitted/are planning on only admitting 20% of students who applied to the social science division. Transfer Selection FAQ's

Last year's admit % for transfers was 30%, and this year it's projected to be 26%. This year there's more transfer applicants than last year (1,352 more) competing for less spots than last year (87 less spots)...

I guess I have a couple of months to cure cancer and AIDS so my appeal goes through...

Hahahah... pretty funny. But anyone who watches south park already knows a cure for AIDS has already been found.

The director at UCB is cool as hell. I met him and heard him speak at a Cal event I went to at the LAX Hilton last October.

This is great news. This is going to make acceptance this year sooo much sweeter. woo hoo!!! :D

I wish i had your confidence Edward. Reading this thread honestly made me a little depressed. I applied to social sciences so I have a 20% chance of acceptance....1 in 5......not very good.

fijeeboi,

It depends on the strength of your application. If you're a strong applicant, then you've got a way better shot than 1 in 5. (;

Well not really fijeeboi, your chance is a lot greater (or weaker) based on your GPA, pre-reqs, personal statement, and to some extent your extracurriculars.

So if you worked as hard as you possibly could have through CC and gave your application your absolute all, then sit back and rest easy. :)

Yea I hear you guys. I think im a strong applicant with a 3.85-3.86 uc gpa. Hopefully the military background helps as well. I still feel like im not getting accepted for some reason. I guess we will see.

well, i only applied to berkeley on a whim to see if i would even get in, so i gotta say, to be running with a strong group of kids this year makes me feel good that when i do get the big old R, i'll know i lost out because it was a super strong pool this year and not that i'm a complete loser.

good to see your confidence.

i applied to Berkeley too just to see if i get in too, but if i dont get in, i think ill feel like a loser. haha
