I got deferred EA a while back, just like a lot of you. But after emailing a letter of continued interest, my regional counselor/director replied saying that I may write a letter expressing my intent to attend Notre Dame. Is this basically me promising to attend Notre Dame if I get in? Tbh I’m not sure what to say, since one of the supplements was “Why Notre Dame”…
Also, this can’t be binding or anything like that since it’s just an email, right? Then I don’t really get the point.
If you haven’t already, I would shoot this by your high school’s college councilor. This may be something the counselor does to gauge interest in deferred applicants, so I would definitely send the letter. If Notre Dame isn’t your top choice, don’t say that. If it is, be explicit. This would be nonbonding, but I’d be careful not to outright lie on it (don’t say ND is your top choice if your dream has always been to go to Harvard and you applied RD). Like any corresponded with a college, I would write it, let it rest, then have yourself and a parent/english teacher look over it. They’re giving you another opportunity to impress them, so use it well. Best of luck!
Also, These are going to be comments written by random strangers on the internet. Take them with a grain of salt, and instead talk to someone with more experience who you can trust.
There was a blog post a few weeks ago written by one of the admissions counselors that addressed what I think you are asking. I don’t have the link but if you go on the ND Admissions website you should be able to find it. Good luck!
You can say something like Notre Dame remains my top choice for college and if accepted I will attend (if it is more appropriate you can consider being a little vague and saying something like I plan on enrolling or I will attend s long as it is affordable). I don’t believe such and email is binding (you can confirm with your guidance counselor) since it is not signed by you, your parents, and your guidance counselor like an ED sheet is.
