Letters of Recommendation

I had a letter of recommendation written with my original application when I applied EA to ND back in the fall. It was from a teacher who knows me well and it was a good rec.... then I got deferred.

So I figured it would be good to have another letter sent. I asked another teacher of mine who I have gotten to know well over the first semester who happens to be an ND alum to write me a letter. I'm wondering if this was a good move/ if it will help my chances?

My ACT is 32, GPA is 3.83, my school is very competitive, and I'm involved in numerous extracurriculars, including captain of a varsity sport.... what do you think?

Well "my school is very competitive" is what almost everyone says, doesn't make it true.

The ACT is acceptable but not amazing, I don't know about GPA cause idk if it's weighted or not, and "numerous" extracurriculars doesn't tell me much. Does that mean 2? or 20?

Do you have a lot of leadership and service? Did you write a good essay? That's what they are looking for.

I don't think the fact that the teacher is an ND alum will make any difference at all, and if I rememeber correctly I believe that they were very adamant that they only wanted ONE rec letter.

The stuff you are supposed to add for deferment are things like extracurricular success, awards won, better grades, new scores etc. I don't think just a new rec letter is going to change your file for the better.

And ND has a very high acceptance rate EA but a pretty low rate for RD so there won't be as many places.

You've got good stats, but you're going to need something to distinguish yourself if you want to get in.

i would do it... you look like you are right there

ND specifically says not to send extra things. It will just be a pain in the ass for admissions to have another thing to look at.

well i understand what danbrenn is saying, as they state they only what one recommendation, but evidently u need to show a little more in ND's opinion and so a recommendation may do this

i would've said no if you were thinking of sending 2 recommendations in with your first application, but because you've been deferred i think that an extra recommendation would

a) show your continued interest

and

b) possibly show a different side of you not portrayed before

i would say yes, but make your own choice... i really think it would not hurt

Call or e-mail your rep about this--or have your counselor do this. You might be able to find what is appropriate.

Send them flowers. Or camp out on God Quad until they let you in.
