My daughter has been a TA at religious school for the past 5 years. The principal of the school loves her and relies on her more than the other TA’s. Ideally, my D would ask her for a letter of recommendation. However, this woman is like an absent minded professor. Very intelligent but kind of all over the place. She sent out an email to the parents with several spelling mistakes. My D is worried not about the content but about the grammar/spelling, etc. She doesn’t know how the colleges would view the rec if it’s not written well, even if it’s positive. I told her I would ask the experts here. Thank you.
Doesn’t sound like it would be a very convincing letter of recommendation.
No. Too risky. Besides, people in this position are not used to writing college recommendations (as compared to HS teachers), so the content might not reflect what a college rec should say.
Some recommenders will let you read what they wrote. If you could somehow arrange to see a draft of the letter, you could edit it and make sure there are no such errors. Or you could ask that person to make sure they have someone else read it for proofreading purposes. Unless you have someone else who could write a great letter from that perspective, I would hate to see you lose the opportunity to have a potentially great letter like that!
I would not ask as your D cannot insist on proofreading the letter before it goes it.
I think a mistake here or there isn’t going to kill the LoR – readers know this. Now if this was her AP English Lit instructor, then I’d advise something differently.
