Letter of Recommendation for NMF App?

Is a letter of recommendation needed for the application? I've seen people mentioning it on this site, but my GC told it it wouldn't be needed until later in the process.

When you log in to your account you will see if everything was transmitted. Call them if you aren’t sure. The counselor has to endorse you which requires a recommendation.

@isaelijohjac do I see that after I turn in my part?

We just hit submit the other day. Now our login page shows that our part is done, but that the school’s part is not. In talking directly to my school staff, they claim they’ve done everything except what they are referring to as the “letter of recommendation”.

@PAMom21‌ I am a homeschool parent. Because I am the principal I had to assign another endorser to endorse my student and write the recommendation so that it isn’t her parent (me). Once I sent in the endorser’s name she got an invitation and wrote the recommendation and endorsed her. My point here is SOMEBODY needs to write the recommendation for the student BEFORE the deadline–the principal or the person the principal assigns. I would call NMSC first thing Monday morning.

DO you see this when you log in to your student’s account? This is what we see on my daughter’s account.

You submitted your portion of the application on 09/23/14.
Your completed application was transmitted to NMSC on 09/27/14.

@PAMom21‌ Per the instructions on the #6 the school has to complete their portion. I can see this because I am the principal though I couldn’t fill it out. It asks specific questions about the student’s course rigor, etc and then there is space to write the recommendation. The recommendation is not separate–there is no way to complete it without completing the portion that asks for a recommendation…it’s on the same page…

@isaelijohjac So the school needs to do 3 things: submit a transcript, complete a form (class rigor, etc.) and write a few sentences or paragraph about endorsing the student?

About how long would it take for the school to complete their part of the application? An hour?

Yes, thank you @isaelijohjac ! I do see that. I didn’t mean that my school was skipping that part, but trying to share what (little) I knew of the alleged rec. You obviously have more first hand info. NMSFs are unusual at my kid’s school, and as such, it’s been an interesting process. My principal and GC have been extremely helpful, informing me of each step along the way. Fortunately they followed through with the rec, and my kid’s application is now complete, as of yesterday.

@pamom21 great news! I was concerned they only did the first half :)

@joe2015 NMSC doesn’t require a submitted transcript-they ask the counselor to list all classes taken and grade and current courses–categorized by subject (Science, math, etc.) This shows on the application as a grid for all years going across the top and clearly shows that the student has or hasn’t taken three years (9-11) of the major subjects. Current courses are listed seperately. They are asked to explain any discipline issues or anything else the counselor wants to add. Whoever the endorser is (most cases the counselor/principal) has to list rigor as compared to the rest of the school, and how enthusiastically they recommend the student based on academic achievement, extracurriculars and personal qualities–they have to check a box that ranges from below average to outstanding. The rec is almost the entire page–maybe 2/3. The school lists GPA and the highest courses offered at the school–I assume to compare rigor.

Thank you @isaelijohjac for the detailed description. So it looks like it won’t take too long to complete.
I assume the student will not be able to see the rec?

@Joe2015‌ 1/2 hour for the classes and other–the recommendation could very much vary. No, the student can’t see the rec
