Does NMSF require a teacher recommendation in order to advance to finalist status? I didn't see anything about it on the application but I heard somewhere that it's required. Does anyone know the answer to this????

Yes, a recommendation is required.

Requirement #4 in the Requirements & Instructions document reads “Be fully endorsed for Finalist standing and recommended for a National Merit Scholarship by your high school principal (or school official designated by the principal).”

At my son’s school, the teachers write the recommendation letters as designates of the principal.

Thanks! But I’m homeschooled, so should I have one of the people writing my college application recs write it or have my mom (the “school official”) do it?

Also, how does the teacher/whoever submit their recommendation?

Those are good questions for which I have no answers. I suggest you contact the National Merit Scholarship Corporation at (847) 866-5114, and post what they tell you so others can learn from your experience.

Just did that. Thank you so much!

They said that I can use an outside teacher, tutor, etc. I am using one of my college dual enrollment professors. They also said that part of the school portion that homeschooled parents fill out, which I didn’t see before, had a section in which you can provide a recommender’s name and email address.
