Letter of Recommendation from a coach?

Rice asks for two letters of recommendation. I have a coach who taught me a health type class in eighth grade and have known him since seventh grade (6 years). He knows me very well and sees many good traits in me that a classroom teacher wouldn't see, simply because sports are in a completely different environment than a classroom. Would it be helpful to send in this letter, which I am positive would be extremely positve about who I am as a person (for example he said that he would trust me with his life for NHS letter of rec) or should I find two teachers who now me way better as a student but not nearly as well as a person? I was planning to send one from my coach and one from a teacher? Should i do this or send two teacher recs and send in his as a supplemental third letter of rec?

sorry that this was so long.

Thanks!

I would recommend sending it in as a 3rd letter of recommendation. It’s probably best to have two academic ones, but it sounds like your coach can add something positive and that’s worth sending, too.

Agreed. I would send your regular recommendation letters from teachers who know you and know your academic ability. This can be an excellent supplement to those. Then again, a letter from a coach is much better than a generic letter from a teacher who doesn’t know you very well.

It depends on what quality of letter you can expect from the teachers and how detailed they will be.
