I’m applying to GeorgiaTech EA within the next month and am going over my application to make sure it’s where it should be. I just have one quick question: Who should my letter of recommendation be coming from? I know it says teacher on CommonApp, but is there a specific GeorgiaTech would want to see? One that corresponds with a major, perhaps?
I’m applying as a CS/CompE major, so I could have my Physics/Calc/CS teacher write one. However, my DECA advisor/business, marketing, & entrepreneurship teacher has had me as a student for four years and has seen me grow and flourish more than anyone on campus. I have spent countless hours with her and peers outside of schools, in different states even. Will the fact that she’s my business/marketing/entrepreneurship teacher hurt me since she isn’t a STEM teacher? Any advice would be awesome, thanks!
Most schools want one or two revs from core academic subject teachers. For a comp aci major, go with the science/math teacher if possible. If they allow additional recs, you could use it,
Yeah, GT only allows for one. So it would be better to have an 7.5/10 from a math or science teacher rather than a 11/10 from a business major(she’s written me 3 letters of rec for summer programs and they truly something else, not trying to exaggerate)?
admission.gatech.edu/freshman/recommendations
says the will “consider” counselor and 1 academic teach rec and no others
FYI, my D got in two years ago with only counselor rec (problem with teacher submitting on common app)
Our experience with this is that having a teacher that BOTH is a good writer, and knows you well is best.
I would go with the business teacher. It sounds like that teacher really knows you and for a long time. If you have read articles by the Admission Director or heard him speak, he really stresses that Georgia Tech wants students who will be engaged on campus in different things. Here is the relevant link about his viewpoint. http://collegeadmissionbook.com/blog/rick-clark-director-admission-georgia-institute-technology
Your business teacher sounds like they would be in a better position to address that issues. Be sure to apply early action, it really does matter. Also make sure your documents are in by the EA deadline since Tech really has a hard deadline (unless you take the last Oct test and have scores sent directly).
