I just received a letter asking me to send a photocopy of my social security card/number. Although I did include my social security number on the University Park application, the application does not require applicants to note their social security numbers so I am confused by the letter's request. Has anyone else received a similar letter asking for official verification of their social security number? Is it possible that my letter was meant to be received after being notified of official acceptance?

I received a letter from the financial aid office requesting SS# verification after I was accepted. So it could be a mistake, you were accepted, or they need verification for some other reason.

I just received a letter like yours too requesting a copy of my ss card… it doesn’t sound legit cause they said that ss # was optional on the application.

Can someone answer this? I will ask my guidance counselor and call Penn State tomorrow. But for now, I’m glad I’m not alone on this one.

I think before you give out your SS#, call either or both the admissions office and the bursar’s office and check with them directly.

Perhaps they are having trouble matching your SAT/ACT score to your SS#. I would call to check.
