Letters from Exeter

After my DC application was complete, we have received letters written by PEA parents and Alumni from Office of Admissions. The letters reflect their experiences with PEA and are truly wonderful.

My son received these letters, as well. I am not sure what the purpose of the letters could be if sent AFTER the application was complete. Exeter does not need to advertise itself now when the applications are in and being reviewed. The letters were very interesting to read, I agree.

We also received these letters. They were so well written and offered such wonderful information. EVERYTHING about that school impresses me. We had the opportunity to meet with the heads of both the Music and History departments in the classroom. It was really a great experience!

By submitting the tedious, hand written essays and application you have expressed a sincere interest in Exeter. I wonder if the letters are not a way of reciprocating, and sharing part of the Exeter community with you.

Some of us Exeter parents wonder why Exeter does not “promote” more (some similar schools are very active marketers) but from what I can tell, Exeter wants truly interested (and dedicated) students rather than sheer numbers of applicants.

As the parent of an Exeter Lower, happy to answer any questions.

I have to admit, that I was VERY impressed by Exeter when I visited it with my son for a tour and interview. I was going there somewhat reluctantly, but quickly changed my mind after meeting the tour guide, seeing the school, talking to the interviewer. I am trying not to expect too much on March 10th, but cannot help hoping for a miracle :)

Exeter is very careful to tell applicants who they are, what they have to offer but also make it clear that the Exeter experience is not for everyone, not even for all those who get accepted. It is a very particular style of education both inside the classroom (Harkness all the way) and outside–a mini-university rather than a boarding school in many ways. They want kids who chose them to come for the right reasons and the letters give strong positive messages of those right reasons. I found them to be wonderful and very informative. The acceptance letter has a very nice section where they discuss a couple of the kids admitted and one of them so described is the addressee–making her or him realize that (s)he too is special and valued.

The letters are nice - but they go to everyone - including alumni whose children are applicants. Don’t read anything into it other than it is good marketing and a chance to reach out.

we did not receive this kind of letters. Does it mean the school is not interested in our child ?

No, please don’t assume that. With three thousand + applications, it may have just been lost given the blizzard. Don’t worry about it.

The worst thing you can do as a parent is try reading the tea leaves on what may or may not be a hint.

mom8dad: Maybe your child
's application is still waiting to be read? The letters seem to be tailored to the background/interests of my DC, they literally answered many questions we did not ask but would like to know.

That’s true, a lot of the letters that I received seemed to relate to me in some way. They were really inspirational and further piqued my interest in the school. I love receiving contact from BSs!

lautriv and Katriss, thank you to your replies. I guess it is useless to worry and I will just wait for M10. BTW, I know Andover send out notice on M9, how about PEA?

All of the Ten Schools (including Exeter) will send out their decision on March 9. :)

Exeter still sends out these letters this past week. we received another one.

How is exeter notifying their applicants on mar. 9? By email? (Im international)

turks12345 Internationals usually get emails notifying them of their decision.

^You should also be able to look at the decision on LionLinks.

Hi! I would like to know when those letters were sent from Exeter and when you received the letter. Thank you.

hey 123exeter123, I received my letters, it seems, on random days spread throughout the months of November, December, and January. They were all about two pages thick, front and back.

oh thanks! I received those too.
lautriv posted he got a letter this following week but did anyone else get the same letter? If so on which day did you receive it?
