Letters of recommendation

Hi everyone. So here’s the thing. It’s been about a month since I submitted my applications and my recommendations as well. But a person who has worked closely with me on a social justice project wants to send an additional recommendation now. Do you think the colleges will see it or will they just toss it?

How would anyone know. Some may read it and some may not. Are you concerned it could hurt your chances?

@lostaccount I dont think the lack of a recommendation might significantly undermine my chances. But a well written one might increase the quality i guess.

If you haven’t used your “other” recommender yet, then perhaps you could send it. How big of social justice project was this? If it was a huge undertaking with awards/planning/leadership/outcomes, then yes. However, if it’s just a big project then no.

But…I’m always suspicious of those who say a letter of recommendation from this person or a great interview here will boost their chances significantly.

@golfcashoahu I founded this non profit and It impacted a few thousand transgender and LGBT individuals in India- a country that is aggresively hostile towards the LGBT community. And i did recieve a lot of recognition, have been acknowledged by the minister of technology who allocated funds to my LGBT shelter. And I was felicitated by getting day named in my honor-in my city. Nothing major. But i did feel honored.

A letter of recommendation wouldn’t significantly boost one’s chances per se. But the admissions officers definitely use them to validate the claims the student made in his/her application and/or resume.
