Lewis and Clark vs. Eckerd

I do wonder, though, if you can get into the city from Eckerd by transit or school shuttle?

PM, I don’t know about school shuttle, but a number of years ago I worked had a coworker who vacationed near Eckerd regulary. He told me that public transportation is not good and you really do need a car. BTW, he is a person who loves using public transit (not easy where I live either), so if he says this, I believe him. I just asked because I have not seen this coworker in several years (we no longer work for that company), so I thought that perhaps things might have changed.

There is a bus that goes into St. Petersburg. My dd asked about it when she visited the school, but hasn’t used it yet.

Okay, so Eckerd is isolated, and students with cars probably feel a greater sense of freedom than those without. Does that mean they “have” to have a car? Again, I think it depends on the student and how they feel about the school. I would sure hate to think either of my kids made a decision about which school to attend based on whether or not they needed a car.

Will you get a chance to visit either one?

We’re waiting for acceptance letters before we visit. I agree that a car isn’t ever necessary. Nicer for some locations than others. Not a deal breaker.

I may have already said this, I can’t remember. Dd was accepted by both Lewis & Clark and Eckerd. L&C was her first choice. Then we got the financial aid offers. Basically L&C made it impossible for her to attend, without us going into severe debt. Eckerd had a much more generous offer.

I guess my question about those who question whether a car is needed is this. Are you asking because you want to know if you should send your student to school with a car? Or are you asking because if they need a car to get around it wouldn’t be the school for them?

My neighbor’s daughter is a freshman at Eckerd and she loves it. We live on the West coast in CA and Eckerd was suggested by a paid college guidance counselor. She wanted SMALL, good merit aid, someplace where she didn’t have to have top stats, but where she will be challenged. Her mom told me she was very impressed with all the personal attention they give their students. The freshmen go out a couple weeks earlier to be oriented to the campus. Oh, and there’s a dorm that allows pets! Frankly, I don’t think I could find the time and energy to study, socialize and care for a pet, though. :)

2Leashes, we’re on the west coast in CA as well and my dd is a freshman at Eckerd. She is loving it as well. I wonder if the girls know each other, lol.

Freshmen have a 3 week long Autumn Term where they are initiated into college life. They attend one course, with the professor who becomes their Mentor for the year. They also have a lot of other activities, some required, some optional to get them involved in student life.

I bet they do know one another! Or at least, share a class or two.
