Hello. I’m applying to UK for fall 2018 and I would like to do the Lewis Honors College for various reasons. I have already finished (but not submitted) my common app essays for My question is about the pathways within the college. I’m not interested in studying business or nursing, and I’d like to avoid taking any classes in these fields that are not directly beneficial to my major (engineering). In other words, I’m not particularly interested in any of the honors college pathways, including the Engineering and Management program. However, I’m am wondering whether selecting the “No specific pathway” option will affect my ability to be admitted to the college, and how not having a pathway affects the honors college experience.
As a footnote, I am a current NMSF and am interested in the Patterson scholarship if/when I am named NMF. An admissions rep told me that this is offered automatically to all NMF, but another post on CC mentioned something about having to contact the school preemptively to be offered the Patterson. Is this true, and if so, how and when should I go about doing this?
The short version, honors courses are in philosophy or English or something that is thought provoking etc…as an engineering student your last year will have a senior project counting as your honors class. My sons freshman year has an honors class that was on top of his normal class load. Yes 19 credits vs the normal 16. My son loves the school.
Hi there! If you’re going into engineering, your only option for a pathway is SEAM (Scholars in Engineering and Mgt).If this pathway doesn’t sound interesting to you, then you can just select “no specific pathway” and you’ll be considered for regular university honors. It shouldn’t make a difference in terms of your likelihood of getting in–a pathway is just a way to further customize your honors experience under a specific thematic umbrella once you’re at UK.
Thank you so much! I didn’t want to do SEAM because of the mandatory business component - business was my previous choice of major and when I switched to engineering it was for very strong personal reasons, so studying business is NOT on my agenda. My only concern was getting rejected for an apparent lack of direction without a specific pathway, but if you say it doesn’t matter then that’s great. Thank you!
My son did not choose a specific pathway. He is a neuroscience major, and he is actually taking extra honors courses as he enjoys them so much. He did come in with many dual credit hours, though, so he has some room for extra coursework.
