LGBT at Marist

I’m a senior applying to Marist this year. I visited recently and really liked it. I thought it had great opprotunities and a nice classroom setting for me. I’m also gay and that makes me scared. Yes Marist does have LGBTQ resources but I know it isn’t the most diverse. I wanna know if this is a good school for me. I was bullied so bad for being gay that I left school and I don’t want history to repeat itself and get extreme homophobia like I did in school. I just want someone to tell me from personal experience what it was like being gay at Marist. Thank you.

My son just graduated. He’s not gay, but was involved with a variety of groups where there were students of all types. His friends from singers, theater, and anime were varied; he says there is a high level of acceptance without judgement.

Well, students at marist are not known the be the most diverse and they tend to be a little more sheltered and conservative (founded as a catholic school) but I’m sure you will find your niche there. It’s just it isn’t like NYU or something where a substantial number of students are LGBTQ.

Marist is not the most diverse campus you will see. However, there are many clubs on campus to help you find your niche or if you want to get involved wit ha particular group. We have a black student union, the international club, as well as an LGBTQ club if you really are curious about joining. Marist may not be super diverse but there are ways to meet and befriend a wide variety of people from all different cultures, customs, and backgrounds.
