I’m looking for information on LGBT life at Brown. I don’t need to know that it’s “accepting,” because most of the elite schools are, and Brown has a reasonably liberal reputation. Instead, I have the following questions:

1) Is the LGBT community sizable? (Primarily wondering about L and B, but any comments are welcome.)

2) Is the LGBT community well-organized? I’ve noticed that some schools like Penn and Cornell have a central LGBT office with paid staff, student groups, etc.; other schools like Yale tend to leave LGBT students to their own devices.

3) Has Brown made strides to be welcoming to such students? An example would be gender-neutral housing and/or bathrooms. (This isn’t necessary, but I do find it indicative of the general atmosphere on campus.)

4) How interested is the average Brown student in activism? (Of any kind/purpose.)

Yes.

As far as I can tell, yes, though through student groups.

Yes. In general I find such measures superfluous here (except perhaps gender-neutral bathrooms) since it’s really a nonissue to most of the student body. That is, no one is really going to care that you’re gay or bi or trans, but you can certainly find ways to interact with people with similar interests/orientations and educate the larger community.

Um… 6/10? I’m not so I don’t know.

huge, in comparison to most schools

yes, there is a resource center with staff, an umbrella organization that has a bunch of sub groups under it, an lgbtq dean. A group called Girls Night Out that I presume you would be interested in if you are looking for L and B gets together to watch movies or go dancing outside of meetings fairly often.

there are gender neutral bathrooms in many areas, there are 2 campus wide parties, lot of stuff.

Average, I don’t know. Some particular ones? very much so. There is a group, QPAC queer political action committee, in addition to all the other activism groups.

does the BIte group still exist?

Yes, the BIte group does certainly still exist.

There is a huge amount of LGBTQ activism and a big student structure of the QA supported by various paid university employees.

nice. the BIte group sounds cool! is it a fairly big group? and do they do activist stuff on campus or just meet for fun?

it’s my understanding that BITE is a social group, along with GNO, and QPAC and RUQUS are the political groups

Thanks for the info! :)
