I was recently accepted to Denison with a generous aid package, but I am worried about how conservative the school is re LGBT students. I am ftm (female to male) transgender, meaning I was born female and have transitioned to male. I am curious if anyone knows how supportive the students, faculty, and staff would be of this.
We know some current Denison students, and from their attitudes and experience it seems to be very liberal/accepting on LGBT issues and there would be no issues from faculty and staff at all. There are conservative students on campus so the post-election conversations have been challenging, as some conservative students felt judged as supporters of Donald Trump. The school (President Weinberg is a gem) is committed to open dialogue – the commitment at Denison is to “living” diversity, not just having a diverse student body – so the school supports dialogue and engagement, beyond just being able to say it is x% of first gen or multi-racial or other category of students. That being said, 18-22 year olds can be stupid, and can say or do stupid things, but that should be the exception, and the community is committed to inclusiveness and dialogue.
Can you connect with Outlook, which is the LGBT organization on campus?
Yes, it’s accepting. My D (class of 2010) recently married her former girlfriend/roommate. No issues at the school.
