Hopkins has extremely little institutional support compared to its peer universities, so I was wondering what the quality of life for LGBT students on campus was like.

Personal experiences are preferable.

Not first hand, but there was a thread about this a while ago. Hopkins definitely has it’s share of LGBT students. It’s definitely an open-minded institution and Baltimore does have an active LGBT scene.

Just because a school has a club promoting acceptance, doesn’t mean the school’s culture per se is accepting.

If you are seen walking around holding hands, you will be given second glances.

True, but if you think about it, that’s going to happen anywhere, really. I’m not gay, but I have some friends who are gay. They never complain about feeling hated or left out. Trust me, there are schools where people are much more judgmental.

I don’t think anyone really cares that much at Hopkins to make a big stink about the LGBT community. I’d say Hopkins is a place with lots of open minds - more-so that most places.

As AdamJaz said, just because a school has a club doesn’t mean it’s accepting; similarly, just because there aren’t hundreds of folks in the lgbt community (like nyu) doesn’t mean it’s not an accepting, open community.

Don’t confuse tolerance with acceptance. There is no LGBT “community” at Hopkins; but, LGBT students seem to be able to be themselves without receiving hostility.

Thanks for the input, guys!

There are schools where the community is accepted. American U in Washington, DC, for example.

Hopkins students are open minded? Really? Compared to what? Brigham Young University?

Compared to a lot of schools, actually. It’s not so much that we’re open-minded as we just can’t seem to be bothered to care, to be honest. If we see two guys kissing in the streets, we’ll probably react as follows:

“Huh.”

And walk right by. When it comes to societal/political issues, we’re more apathetic than anything. Don’t expect acceptance so much as just disinterest, for the most part. You’re just like any other student on campus, in that you’re… well, not seen as particularly interesting or anything. Just another potential curve destroyer, haha. ^^;

Also, I’m on the DSAGA mailing list 'cause they shoved stuff at me during the SAC Fair, and they’re pretty darn active - probably one of the more active groups on campus, though they keep to themselves most of the time. There was a “Gay’ve” a week or so ago - a “Gay Rave” or something, and DSAGA holds events and meetings pretty often. I think they also had a trip to a DC thing already this year, too, plus some nightclub stuff.

This just goes to show you that even in urban centers like DC - nobody is immune to hate crimes.

Ι am really sad about this…I am not gay,but is not acceptable for a student who lives in a university treated like a crap because of his/her sexual orientation. We talking about a human right.
U.S.A for me is a country that represents freedom, democracy and respect those choices…
And those facts show racism and a antiquated people…:(

Thanks for the information, PrescitedEntity. :)
