LGBT

How gay friendly is RIT? Is there an involved LGBT community? This will be a factor when we start looking at schools for my S. He wants to major in computer science/game design/development. I would appreciate if any past or current students or even parents can chime in. Thanks in advance.

wow- no one knows about this?

Honestly RIT doesn’t really have a reputation one way or the other on this issue. Of all the well-known Game Design schools out there I would guess that USC may be the most LGBTQ friendly and then RIT is next. I know I am about to stereotype but RIT has a strong Arts program which may attract more LGBTQ students. It also has a huge deaf population which may make it more accepting of diversity.

I know of several LGBTQ students within the computer science major, and to my knowledge there has never been any issue with that. Obviously there are going to be very small groups of individuals who are unaccepting, but you are going to get that at any university.

There are a lot of open LGBT students here. There are also clubs for these students created by LGBT students themselves.

It sounds like a cliche but some of my sons best friends at RIT are gay and he isn’t. It’s all matter of fact from what I can tell. I think most kids there just take it in stride.
