So, I visited Northwestern this past weekend, and quite liked it. It seemed to really fulfill my needs/wants in a college, with its geographic diversity, approachable and motivated student body, and its close proximity to a large and artistically-inclined city. Moreover, though, I loved the conservatory/liberal arts conjuction, since I would like to pursue singing while also receiving a strong liberal arts education.

On that note, I was wondering whether any of you had any experience with the 5 year conservatory/liberal arts program that you could share with me. Or, if any of you could comment on the ease of participating in the music opportunities sponsored by the conservatory-- without actually being in the 5 year program itself.

Hi...my freshman daughter is in the school of communication as a theatre major, may pursue MT certificate--audition held end of freshmen year I believe. She did not audition to get into the theatre program-it was strictly applications/essays/Sats/recommentation letters. She wanted the academic rigors of an elite university coupled with a recognized theatre program. She is not in the 5 year program-but-she is heavily involved with MT, and is taking additional voice lessons/class by audition after she arrived on campus in September. She feels her counselor is pointing her in the direction to maximize her interests in voice/performance. I hope this insight helps. A mom

Well neither programs (theatre and music) are conservatory programs. Our School of Music is the top non-conservatory program in the country. Anyway, that's just semantics.

I know a few ppl in that 5 year program who really seem to enjoy it.

juliusmonky,
can you explain a bit about why they don't enjoy the 5 year program? It's one of the programs I really like and am considering to participate. I'd appreciate it if you can offer some details. :D

Well if you reread I did say they "really seem to enjoy it." So I can't really offer you much insight because my only knowledge is that the students in the program seem content. I do know one girl who switched out but I think that has more to do with the 5 years than with the program.
