Liberal arts colleges with vibrant rock music scene

Besides Wesleyan, which NESCAC schools have the best music scenes?

Why do you want a NESCAC school? Are you an athlete?
Colby has a good music scene.

I’m willing to look outside of NESCAC; I’m just using them as a jumping off point.

What do you mean music scene? To attend? To play?

I’m operating under the assumption that you can’t attend concerts unless there are people there to perform at them. Large unis located in big cities don’t have to concern themselves too much with providing an arts/entertainment scene for their students; it’s part of the backdrop of any metropolitan center. Small colleges aren’t so lucky; they have to create their own, either organically or, I suppose, by importing it. But, if they’re only providing music one weekend at a time, I’m hesitant to call that a scene; it’s evanescent; it evaporates as soon as the band gets paid. I’d like to hear other’s thoughts on the subject.

You haven’t clarified the question for me. Are you asking about students participating (i.e. their own bands) or bringing in professional groups on a regular basis? For instance Lewis and Clark has open mike time every weekend in the cafes and students are regularly playing there. But I don’t think they have bands coming through on campus (though Portland OR is right there…)

You’re asking me to narrow my definition and I don’t want to do that. I’m open to the idea that a place like Lewis and Clark has a decent music scene; its name came up in a similar thread, so maybe there is something to it. Someone also mentioned, the University of Puget Sound, and Lawrence and Beloit, both in Wisconsin.

Rhodes. It’s not all country music in Memphis, TN!

Not NESCAC, but I got the impression that Skidmore has quite a happening music scene.

I believe Grinnell has a student-run group that books acts pretty frequently. Not sure I’d call it a ‘scene’ though.
