I'm really into the indie/folk music scene and that's why I have my heart set on colleges in the Pacific Northwest like University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, and Lewis & Clark. But I'm honestly open to anywhere in the country as long as they have great music lol

What can anyone tell me about areas with similar music scenes? It's one of the important "trivial factors" I have when selecting colleges because I really want to have a great time and go to shows when I'm in college.

And for reference here's the music I'm interested in: Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale, First Aid Kit, James Vincent McMorrow, Lykke Li, Best Coast, Laura Marling, Vampire Weekend, etc.

So I know nothing about music (I haven’t heard of any of the bands you like…) but I go to school in New Orleans and there are always concerts (sometimes free, and good bands play at Jazzfest every year) and good local music (mainly Jazz). Somebody is always playing music, to the extent that I got used to falling asleep to a drunken saxophone player who played every night right outside my dorm building 1 am, and when I left for summer I had a hard time falling asleep in my quiet town.

New Orleans is known as a music capital of the world so if that interests you at all, check out some of the schools. Tulane is well known, but other schools (that I know of) are Loyola University New Orleans, Dillard University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and University of New Orleans. Tulane and Loyola are closest to the streetcar and it will be easiest to get to the French Quarter from there.

Austin does not appeal to me, nor does New Orleans. I should have also mentioned that another one of my trivial factors was somewhere that snowed. I’ve lived in Florida my entire life and would really like to live somewhere where it snows and has an actual winter – it’s my favorite season.

I’ve also heard that financial aid is hard to come by at NYU and other schools. Financial aid is a big deal for me as it is for many other students.

You could take a look at the schools in the 5 College Consortium in the Pioneer Valley in Western MA. Amherst/Northampton have great music scenes (I think Fleet Foxes just played in NoHo in the past few months). Another option, if you’re looking in the Pacific Northwest, might be Western Washington University. One of my friends will be attending WWU after taking a gap year, and one of her “must have” criteria was the presence of an indie music scene.

Nashville, TN has a great music scene - all types of music. Looks like if you google a number of those bands they’ve played in Nashville in the past couple of years.

Wesleyan (Middletown, CT) has a pretty awesome music scene considering its size and lack of a conservatory (2800/300 u/g): Bands

Just looked it up, the music scene and the general feel around the 5 College Consortium seems awesome! Definitely a place I can see myself. On the other hand, if I were in Washington I would strongly prefer being in Seattle. Thank you so much though! I’m doing some research on UMass-Amherst right now :)

Nashville doesn’t really meet my other winter factor. Thanks for your input though!!

Wesleyan is a huge shot for me, know any other colleges or universities in CT with similar music scenes?

Any of the schools around Boston should fit your needs - most tours come through, and there’s a great local music scene. Considering the other schools you mentioned, you might like Emerson.

@jcc I was reading some reviews on UC Boulder and it seems like it’s a big party school? I’d like to know because I’m not that big on partying (I’m kind of a nerdy type) and it seems like a small town. If it were in a big city, that would be fine, but I don’t think it is? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

@bruno I was considering Boston U and Suffolk actually! I have a few friends who live in and around Boston and they were trying to sell it to me haha. Looked up Emerson - everything I want to major in they only have minors in it :/

Anything in Minneapolis or St. Paul would be a good fit. They have a great live music scene up there. Macalester College, Carleton College all have connections to it. Great education and good music. Snow too.

My senses are tingling. Honestly. After looking at information about both these schools I’m in love. Thank you so much for introudcing me to these two schools!! Now I really need to raise my test scores for them. They’re beautiful. And they’ve got the music scene I’m looking for too? Evidence enough is Bon Iver and his love for Wisconsin and Minnesota.

You are so welcome! It is part of my decision also so I’ve tried to look at the music scenes all around the place. Macalester and Carleton are great colleges, although Carleton’s a bit outside the city but that’s not too much trouble.
