Curious what this learned audience thinks.... Nephew is considering medicine, but isn't sure, but has read that it's no longer necessary to major in one of the sciences. He'd like to major in economics, but fulfill the prereqs. Thinks he'd have a better chance getting a job in case he decides against med school (or can't get in!). Also what about taking time off between graduation and med school?? Still a freshman at a top-30 LAC, so he has time to decide. Thanks for your input.

If he likes economics, I say that he should go for it.

As far as time off, as long as he is doing something productive it won’t hurt him (and quite often is helpful, about half of the students in the top 10 took time off)

There are quotas for everything at med school, including undergraduate major. So majoring in Econ likely provides a small advantage versus the typical biology/chemistry major.

You definitely need to talk to bluedevilmike - he was an economics major (I believe) and has gone on to do some absolutely incredible things. And, he’s not done yet!

I heard any major is fine. I know people in very selective conservatory of music and others Latin major. Most pre-meds have minor(s) anyway some of them are completely non-related to medicine and science in general.

Where did you hear this? I’m almost positive this isn’t true.

It isn’t true.
